Apple's 23" display

Hi,

I'm looking for a 23"/24" display that would work decently with my
powerbook (the latest 15", 1.67, 2GB, 100GB) and, through the right
converter, with a PC laptop.

I've discovered that with the PC I have, the 23" Apple display might
look fuzzy. I certainly know it is the case with the 24.1" Sun flat LCD. But, if
I put the settings of the PC so that it's the equivalent of the 20" display, then
it looks fine on the Sun, and I presume the same will be on the Apple.

Anyway.. My question is whether anyone has any good advice concerning
which display I should get.

Is the Apple 23" good when used with a PB?

Do you know of any 23"/24" display that would work well with both a PB and
also a PC (not simultanuously though ) ?

The PC has a VGA. I'll need an adapter (which is not a problem), but it seems that I may not be able to use the full resolution. Like I said, I know it is the case
with the Sun 24.1" I have at my office.

I hear the Dell 24" 2405FPW is good! (I don't care much about the looks if there are big differences in performance, e.g. pinkish greys and so on)

Heck, maybe my PC will even work fine with the Dell at full resolution! Who
knows?! [ Maybe I should take it to a computer store and hook it up and
see how it looks... ]

Any suggestions?

Edit: Let me also mention that the difference in price is not the issue either..
It's simple: I want a good display, and I heared the Dell 2405FPW is as good
(or better) than the Apple one. If they were equally good, I'd go with the apple + adapter (for the PC) because of the looks (but ONLY if they are
EQUALLY good).

I would go with the dell. I am pretty sure it has both dvi and vga. It also comes with HD component input so you can hook up an hd signal to it. If I were buying a display that is the one I would go with. I think there is a 25% coupon for it right now.

I say go with the Dell 2405fpw. It is a great looking screen.

The best 3 displays available are the Apple 20", Dell 2405 and the Apple 30"

It may surprise you to read so many positive reviews of a Dell product
in a Mac forum, but the members here are being quite objective.

The Dell 2405 is a great display for the money without sacrificing functional
quality by any means.

It also offers dual DVI/VGA input, portrait mode, picture in picture and picture by picture.

So I might be biased but I just recived my dell 24" yesterday!!!!

It is so beautiful, bright and colorful.

I was lucky enough to get it on slae at 989CDN$.

It runs through my powerbook 15 inch (128vid card) no itch.

I mean I am still speechless in front of it, its amazing and I would recommend it over the apple monitor anyway.
Sure the apple looks cool, but its only 1 year warranty, some have color problems and it is sooooooo expensive.
Also the Dell has all the inputs possible(besides tv-tuner) but still the HDTV inputs will match my xbox 360 perfectly.
OH and yes the dell can run pc and mac simultaniously since it has both vga and dvi inputs with a function of split screen where you can see both signals on the 24 inch!!!

Anyway It's an awesome monitor, I fear in the next few months Ill get a second one. Now All I ahve to do is wait for the dual-core PPC!!!!

Srry if I type crappy I just woke up and the brightness levels on the dell in the dark are blinding me (kidding but I just woke up so its bright)

I have my Dell's brightness control set at 25% and it's still remarkably bright, crisp and pleasure to use.

The funny thing I've noticed is that the HD quality of this display
shows faults in the production of lower resolution DVD's.

You wouldn't notice this on a regular TV or lower resolution LCD,
but it's interesting to see this much detail in the film editors production quality.

OK. I've decided to go with the Dell 24". not just because
of the 5 inputs, the 4 USBs, and the higher number of degrees of freedom
for the pannel.. but because many (on this forum and elsewhere)
said it just works better.. also, it doesn't have the potential problems the
23" apple display may have (the pinkish greys, etc).. AND it's cheaper (which
was the last factor in the decision).

i've tried it in the store (where i actually even liked its looks!) with a PB15" and it worked perfectly. i've also tried
it with a PC laptop, and it was a bit fuzzy at the full resolution, but that may
be because i need to update my video driver.. however, even as it is, when i
lowered the resolution to the equivalent of a 20", it was perfect. which i
consider is OK. 20" is still quite big.. and if i end up figuring out how to make
it as crisp with the full resolution, that would be heaven.

(i have both a PB and a laptop.. that's why even though potentially i may
use it just as a 20" display for the laptop, i'm still getting the 24")

by the way, it was the same thing with the apple display. i.e. when i hooked
up my PC and calibrated the 23" (with the PC set to full resolution), it was a
bit fuzzy.. that may be a problem with my video driver.. or with the DVI to VGA conversion.. i'm not sure. but in any case, it was not better than the
Dell.

There is only one dell 24" pc/mac monitor.
I know its often on sale in the US but here in Canada just last week it was 989$CAD+ tax which is the price I got it at !!!!!

Look you wont be disappointed in the dell 24" I actually don't find it that ugly really.

Stephen, There's a bunch of threads about Dell pricing here.

You have to call them by phone and either use your education or small business discount or simply call their bluff.

The average going price (published all over the web) on a new Dell 2405 FPW 24" WS HD display is now between $800-$899 USD.

You can go the coupon route purchasing online,
but your best deals are usually over the phone
direct with Dell.

If you're a student, start by getting your school's
Dell member I.D. # then call by phone.

got the Dell display, and it works just great! it looks very nice too..
the 4 usb ports are very useful. e.g. i hooked up my keyboard and printer to 2 of them. with the remaining 2, and the 1 i have left on my apple keyboard (the other one is used for the mouse), and the usual 2 on the pb itself, i will never need a hub!!

so there you go.

I'm waiting till January, rumor has it Apple will bring out new displays at MWSF. The new 23" will probably be at least as good as the Dell. If you can wait, wait a couple of months.
