Maybe you haven't noticed but Apple's design, with the new iMac, is moving towards looking like a PC. The latest HP Media Center PCs have a similar 'look' to them with the black finish and all. Apple is known for its clean simple design but now it is moving away from that design. Something similar in the iPhone. This looks scary.

1) PC's are becoming more Apple like, not the other way around.
2) Personally (and I'm not alone, but sounds like I'm not a majority either), I prefer the look of the new iMac over the old one by 10 to 1.
3) How much are you looking at the back of your computer? Seriously. The front is aluminum and a matte black trim around the screen which, as a person who has spent several thousands of dollars and well over 100 hours of time buying and building a dedicated home theatre room, I can say is a fantastic decision.
i'm going to have to agree with you on all three points.
no other computer vendor has a desktop AIO that looks anywhere near as great as the iMac.
i also like the new look of the imac. its a really nice design, i love the curve at the back. i might put a mirror behind it so i can see it! haha.
but seriously, everything about the imac (apart from gpu) is amazing. i am slowly getting used to the black outer-rim.

the same sorta thing happened to me when i saw the MB KB. i was rather put off by the large spaces. but seeing it and touching it in real life made me realise that it really is quite amazing. things can be deceiving.

Well, they are moving all of their products towards a more ... "professional" look. I like the white, "happy" look on the iPod and even the MacBook. They're mobile, hip, whatever you want to say. For something that sits in an office, though, the more subdued, more finished look of the new iMac fits better with most decors, imo.

they've been moving toward minimalistic for quite a while now and this is a further evolution of that certainly.

I didn't care for all that white nonsense.
Except it is not matte, it is as shiny as a mirror!
If they use some kind of matte frosted glass for the front bezel I will be most impressed, but as it is... well it is pathetic and tacky.
Oh, yuck. I assumed it was matte cuz that, well, makes sense. Hm, doesn't really effect my desire for one, but I wonder how much light spills into that area from the screen, etc. Ah well.
As things get smaller, simpler, more compact, the design tends to minimize and become similar. But I still see nothing that similar, yet. If Apple negated the black for silver/polished aluminum you would not be bitchin'. So it is just a color issue.

Doesn't matter, just be sure to turn off all the lights in your room before using it lol.
There was a photo posted by a MR member of it, and it is so reflective you can basically see a nice reflection of everything in front of it.
I still don't really see anything else out there like the Mac designs. Recently lots of manufacturers have tried, but none seem to come close at the end of the day. Apples are always very unique designs and many PC players have been trying to make things look more Apple-like.
Like I've said elsewhere, I think this design is just a sign that Apple are moving towards something very high-tech, almost like a large iPhone on its side, but that at the moment, the tech just isn't there to make it exactly as they want. Hence there's still the chin and its not any thinner.

At first I agreed with the OP, but then I remember that when Macbook first came out, I thought the black one especially looked like a cheap PC. My brother (who isn't an Apple fan) said the same thing. Now I own one and I think it looks great. I think maybe the new iMac will grow on me too. At the moment though, I still prefer the old design.

I think the black plastic on the back cheapens the look of the new iMac. The new design didn't blow me away, it's pretty much the same iMac with a different shell.

I think the new iMac will grow on everyone eventually. I remember there were quite a few naysayers when the iMac G5 first came out.
2007 has been a good year for Apple. iPhones, refreshed Macbooks/Mac Pros, next gen iMacs, Leopard, and 6G iPods next month
...I went to the Southampton UK store at lunch and they had only one new one to look at.
I was a bit disappointed - the aluminium looked more like matt grey plastic and the black around the screen didn't do it any justice. The screen seemed okay for photo editing in the store actually and not too relfective as I previously thought.
edit - standing next to the older models it sadly didn't have the 'edge', in terms of style.

When I first saw the new iMac my mind screamed "HP media center!" to me as well.
To all those who say "don't worry about [this feature], you'll never notice it." - Whenever I'm building something (as a hobbyist or engineer) I keep something in the back of my mind and I'm sure Apple has (mostly) done the same. Even if no-one else in the world will ever see it or ever know how strange/poor/haphazard a feature of my design is, there will always be one person who knows and that is me. How can I truly be proud of something if it's not 100% perfect inside and out? So what if you never look at the back of your screen - it's still ugly. I never liked the bulge on the iMacs for the same reason, but I never heard anyone else comment on it.
