Apple's release of its new operating system, dubbed "Snow Leopard", is helping raise awareness of the plight of one of the world's most endangered big cats, reports the Snow Leopard Trust, a group working to protect the real-life snow leopard in its mountainous habitat across Central Asia.

"This is a boon for wild snow leopards," said Brad Rutherford, Executive Director of the Snow Leopard Trust, "Apple is helping to show the world the beauty and majesty of this rare creature."

…

"We have a new donor match going on through October," he continued. "For all the Apple partners, anything they give will be matched—that means they can have double the impact for snow leopard conservation.”

Snow Leopards are actually cool animals to protect from going extinct, unlike some species I couldn't care less about it. ;)

I can see groups now purchasing naming rights for versions of Mac OS X:

Mac OS X "Manatee"

Mac OS X "Panda"

Mac OS X "Microsoft Fanboy"

Pandas and manatees are basically genetically engineered to go extinct.

I hope you're talking about pandas.

This is great, it always gives me a good feeling inside when animal lives are saved and protected. And raising awareness is one of the first ways to do that :)

I don't know much about manatees, but I have a pretty good idea about pandas. I kept learning about how darn stupid the child-bearing process can be with them with the two born in Atlanta. Apparently a lot of baby pandas die when the mother just squashes the tiny cub by accident. WTF?!?! It also takes a scientific miracle just to get one pregnant. I have no idea how these asexual creatures reproduce in the wild.

I've heard that if they have twins they nurse the weaker of the two and let the stronger one die. And since their diet is 99% bamboo they have a very poor nutrition milk that often can't sustain a child.
