Apple's Two-factor Authentication issue

Apple has had me jumping through hoops after enabling two factor authentication today. Immediately after the iOS update and setting up the new security feature, I get an alert that someone is attempting to log in to an iPad with my credentials near a college about 75 miles from here. After blocking the first attempt, I received another alert for the same thing an hour later. At this point, I decide to change my password and remotely log all devices off. It wasnt until I tried setting up my Apple TV with the new credentials and receiving an alert that someone was attempting to log into an Apple TV with my new credentials at the same location that I realized Apple had the location totally screwed up.

How can it be so far off?

if i am not mistaken it uses the IP to track the log in attemped. when i sign into a new device at work it is almost across the country cuz thats were our servers are and if i do it at my parents tiny town it is showing up in frankfurt which is 2h away

I wondered about that but one of my iPads was on cellular at the time. For all other purposes, they have been able to track my IP to a town 7 miles from me where the local client services are.

Mine will occasionally show me in an unincorporated town 16 miles away... IP geolocation is not accurate sometimes.

Yeah mine shows me in a different city. Just the way the Internet is. I guess it doesn't use GPS.

To be honest I do not even look at the map. I sign in with my Apple ID and password and boom, I get the authentication request on all my devices. I click Allow and keep on going. The chances that some bad guy is doing this at the exact same moment that I am are effectively zero.
