I'm sitting in class, so I can't look this up at the moment.

I will be purchasing an iPad online (Apple's website) and do not plan on purchasing the Apple Protection Plan. With that said, if I receive the iPad and it has dead pixels, or dust under the screen...or anything else that essentially warrants a replacement, how does Apple handle that?

Will I need the protection program? How long is my iPad under warranty without it? 90 days?

Sorry this is such a spotty post... I will be ordering the iPad later today and I'm extremely bored in a summer course (lasts three hours...) that gives 10 minute breaks...

Thanks for not murdering me for such a simple, easy-to-look-up question

You can post on MR, but you can't access google?

Anyway, manufacturing defects are covered under the 1-year warranty that comes standard on Macs and iPads (and probably iPods and iPhones too, can't remember off the top of my head). AppleCare just extends it to 2 years.

2 years, iPhones Pads and Pods are an extra year, not two extra

All new iPads come with 90 day phone support (prob what you are thinking about) and 1 year warranty on defects. Apple Care extends both phone and warranty an additional year so 2 years full coverage. Not 3 years.----sorry beat me to it.

This is what I don't get...

Apple Care doesn't cover accidental damage or anything like that... Just battery issues and manufacturing defects. But any defects would be apparent within that first year (dead pixels for example). Manufacturing defects don't appear in the second year, AFTER the device is manufactured. So aren't you just paying for the telephone support?

Loosely it covers anything that the consumer can't be held reasonably responsible for. For example, the cracked casing on the pre-unibody Macbooks was covered even though it took some time for that particular "defect" to manifest itself. Same with the NVIDIA 8600 graphics card issue a few years ago, and with the discoloring palm rests. If a part fails within the Applecare window not as a result from user damage that's also covered (which isn't really a "manufacturing defect").

So it's worth getting incase there is a defect that doesn't manifest itself until after you've had the product for a year? Plus phone support.

I wish it covered accidental damage when the thing has so much glass on it.

If I accidentally cracked the screen, what would be the process I'd have to go through? Would buying a whole new device be the cheapest option?

You're already covered for a year automatically with the purchase. Buying the additional 2 years is something you may or may not think is worth it.

Display assemblies for the Macbook Pros run around $700 not including labor. You can do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined.
