Hi,

- I have an jailbroken Apple TV 2 with xbmc installed.

Is there a way to play movies remotely from your Mac to your apple tv without being on the same network? i already know how to do it with "Air video" on my iPhone. but i just hate it when I'm at a friend and i can't use my phone when we are watching a movie.

exc. : i have "Big momma (movie)" on my computer at home. and i wanna see it with a friend at his place and i don't want to use a flash drive or such. i just wan't to be able to grab my apple TV, leave the door, shut the door behind me, drive to my friend, plug in the HDMI and start watching, without the use of an iPhone/iPad/iPod. Just stream directly to my Appletv like "air video" does to my iPhone.

Any idea's?

Thnx in advance!

- Joey

Plex.

keep in mind the quality at a remote location probably isn't going to be the best. as the upstream out of your house compared to the needs for decent quality video is pretty slim

Well in conversion settings and then global conversion settings you can adjust the quality in "Air video" up to 2560 kbit/s. This looks pretty sweet.

About plex: is there already an update? Because the last time i tried installing plex trough aTV flash (black) it didn't work!

well, if the upstream on your connection isn't that big, it doesn't matter where you set the quality, the video might look great but it will stutter, and you'll get a bit of video then a couple second pause, if it plays at all.
it might work, it might not, it might work great one morning, and suck that afternoon, and then be great again that evening. all depends on your internet connection

running it entirely on your home network will not provide the same experience as running it over your internet connection to a remote location.

i've been running plex on my apple TV since i bought it in october. it's been updated a couple times in that time. i haven't had any major problems so far. have hit a couple minor rough patches on install, nothing major though, and it is still beta software.

is there a guide somewhere? i installed the Plex client trought aTV Flash and it works. But how do i setup remote access?

You may want to try to change the type of source your ATV2 uses. For example if you were able to setup an FTP Server at home pointed to the location of your movie directory you could then take your atv2 anywhere and plug it in and have access to all your movies. Using this scenario you could install xbmc on any idevice or a mac/pc and have access to your movie collection.

all you need to do is install Plex beta 0.10, it comes with myPLex support, once you log into myPlex, you can stream your media to any device that have a plex client, local or overt the internet. It is pretty easy.

Why not make it easy for yourself...
If you already have air video you can either:

Buy an digital av adapter for your iphone and plug it directly to your friends TV with a HDMI cable. Air video supports tv out so it Will work.

The second option is to bring the atv2 and your iPhone with you. Connect them both to your friends network and use AirPlay to stream from your iPhone to the atv2.

P.s the adapter only costs like 30$. It is a good investment if you use air video and want to access and enjoy your library from anywhere
