AVI's good to go now, you just need "Air Video" on your iphone and computer. I use is for any video files that I don't have in my iTunes library. On the spot conversion of any video type (even obscure ones like OGG etc).

I think it'll have expanding streaming options like Hulu. Maybe Amazon connectivity?

My Predictions:
ATV2: $79
-Same machine, no apps
-Mountain Lion AirPlay

ATV3: $149:
-A5 or A6, Limited Channel Apps (Similar to iPad. ABC, Hulu, CBS, HBOGo etc)
-New remote with Mic to activate Siri
-1080p

I can see how there could be two different type of customers for the AppleTV. Those who just want AirSync, iTunes content and the stuff we have now in a tiny package and those who want everything and don't care if the box is 3x the size (which still is smaller than the AppleTV1).

Personally, I want it all. AirSync from Mac, Siri remote, channel apps etc and I'd gladly pay more for it because it would replace most of the other junk connected to my TV and I can finally cut cable.

1080P - definitely
Processor - My money on a faster dual core
Apps - Yes
Storage - Maybe some on board flash storage for apps, but nothing substantial.
Facetime - Don't think a camera will be shipped with it but having the USB port means there is always the option for an add on

Would not surprise me to see the ethernet port dropped, although think that will happen once 802.11ac is more commonplace.

I'm no audiophile, but I've read some blogs that complain that the ATV2 only outputs audio at 48khz and not 44.1 which is what iTunes is set up to do. Practically speaking I have no idea what this means in terms of sound, but I've seen some people post that the Airport Express is "better" because it does 44.1.
Maybe Apple will somehow address this? Or is this really a non-issue?

Honestly my biggest "want" related to the new AppleTV is support for two channel stereo playback up to 24-bit / 96 kHz. The current ATV takes all two channel audio and samples it to 16-bit / 48 kHz for some odd reason. Hopefully this is remedied in the new version.

Personally, I'd like to see a UI change. Expanded content like Hulu and HBOgo. The damn :apple:Remote app needs an overhaul along with this too...

I doubt your ears could hear the difference... even on quality sound setup. As I understand it, 44.1 is the CD audio standard while 48 is better than the CD audio standard. How much audio is anyone pushing through an :apple:TV at CD or better quality sound? I think most of us are pushing audio compressed down from CD quality, purchased in the iTunes store (which is <CD quality), etc.

I'm guessing the blog complaint is a desire for native pass through at 44.1. But I do wonder if our ears can hear the difference if the source is mostly compressed down from CD quality sound.

I am curious if they are going to expand it to be able to BT conjoin with a wireless keyboard and be used as an full browser of the internet. It obviously is easily capable of doing so, much like the PS3 already does.

11. Annoying lack of needed features - 0% (ATV2 was almost perfect)

Going to have to call you out on THAT one.
Maybe almost-perfect for someone else, but it was far from perfect to most of us for obvious reasons.

What about price?
It will have a price.

No prediction is even close to possible because of what might be added into the device. If it becomes just like it was but with better processor, it's probably $99 again.

I wouldn't mind seeing the UI overhauled to be similar to iOS, even if that meant not being able to touch it (obviously) and having to use the remote.

I think 1080p is a given because of the new setup on iTunes, but I'm not sure on the other stuff. Would be nice to have a USB port on it to pull data right off an external drive, but doubtful. The whole ATV experience is designed to be streamlined and have everything be integrated and used through the iTunes store.

Facetime camera? Doubtful. I don't think that's the point of ATV set-top. If it was an integrated LED TV, this would probably be built in. I'm thinking Starship Troopers right now when Rico calls home.

There is no way that Apple will continue to offer the ATV2 at $99. And I would be very surprised if a new ATV box is more than $100.

/begin rant
How long has it been since apple increase an iPod/iPhone/iPad price? The only way ATV will be more than $100 is if the new ATV is offered in multiple versions and the cheapest version is $100.

With iPod/iPhone/iPad, Apple only differentiates in specs and price for 2 reasons -- storage and wireless technologies. I see no reason for Apple do something different with the ATV. Apple likes consistency across product lines. Since ATV isn't mobile, I don't think it will get a 3G (or 4G) option.

That only leaves storage. For a long time I've been convinced that we will never see storage on the ATV for syncing content again. ATV is a streaming device. If Apple thinks that keeping iTunes running all the time is an issue they want to address, the solution is not going to be syncing to ATV. I predict the solution will be some sort of iTunes server technology -- but I'm not crossing my fingers.

I still agree with that, but I think there are good arguments for the possibility of increased storage. The main argument -- an app store. If the app store comes to ATV, storage will be a hot commodity, which Apple may be able to monetize by offering storage tiers, but storage will only be used by apps.

The problem with that argument is that even with an app store, the demand for storage will be much lower than it would be if you allowed syncing. Apple has a bit of a conundrum. On the one hand, they would like to provide tiers of storage on the ATV because they make so much money on the tiers. On the other hand, syncing with ATV doesn't make that much sense for most people. People want access to their entire movie/TV library and they don't want to worry about syncing. They want access to the same library no matter what TV in their house they are on and, again, they don't want to worry about syncing.

My work provides iPhones so all of my colleges have them. But no one syncs them. And if they sync them, they put music on them and never sync them again. Of my coworkers who got their phones before iOS 5, I'd say less than 10% have upgraded - because they never sync and don't know iOS5 is out there. Syncing in not a part of the phone routine. Even worse with the TV -- no one wants to sync the ATV, so Apple won't make it an option.

So that is a long way of saying -- I think the new ATV will be $100. If there is an app store and if Apple provides multiple storage tiers to store additional apps then there may be an ATV for more than $100.
/end rant

Also -- no way will Apple drop ethernet. Nobody has the new faster routers and nobody but techies worry about wi-fi speed. As a result, wi-fi at speeds fast enough for consistent HD streaming isn't reliable enough to allow Apple to drop ethernet.

The only way the ATV increases in price is if they go with 16GB of NAND storage.

But chances are any increase in NAND storage will be offset by a potentially cheaper A5X processor.

My Predictions:
-New remote with Mic to activate Siri

I don't see it happening, but I'll also readily admit that I'd fork out $200 bucks easily for the option for this.

Not a prediction, just a wish, that they'd make it easier to do playlists for Videos and not just music. That's just me though. I get tired of having to open my remote app every time I want to start a playlist.

Going to have to call you out on THAT one.
Maybe almost-perfect for someone else, but it was far from perfect to most of us for obvious reasons.

You almost had me agreeing with you. The vast majority of people I know find it almost perfect. I would agree that the statement that it isn't prefect would fit, but that it is "infinitely% missing features" is as unrealistic as saying it's perfect. For you and your circle, not good enough. For mine, it's good. Thus the truth is in the middle, it's decent but could use some work.

Here in the UK I hope it allows me to watch BBCi player, 4od etc. with these catch up services it would be real value for money. No chance of this one but I would also like a hardrive so you could record and store media like ATV 1 (but still smaller).
