G'day,

I have a 1st gen (160GB) AppleTV, connected via HDMI to a Samsung series 4 32" LCD with 1368x768 resolution...

(Also am running NitoTV, playing mostly avi's via AirDisk.)

What's the best video output options for this setup?

Do I "undershoot" with 720p, or overshoot with 1080i/p...?

Is there a corresponding performance difference regarding playback?

Cheers

Go with 720p. Some 1360x768 TVs will even be able to display it natively leaving small black bars on each side. 24 pixels top and bottom, etc.

1080p result in unnecessary scaling as the TV is not 1080p and ATV1 won't playback anything at 1080p anyway.

On the 2nd gen (first hockey puck) I run it at 1024x768 for it to correctly show all the data on my 1360x768 TV. Setting output to 720p actually crops the output image of the video.

I noticed it when I first got the ATV2, I was comparing video materials (720p) sources on the iPad vs the TV and it was clearly cropping on the TV. Switching to 1024x768 showed everything as it should.
