AppleTV and Handbrake

Hey guys,

I have a 32inch Sony 1080p LCD. I was wondering whats the best setting on Handbrake to view movies using tv. Before I went HD, I used "Normal" setting which most of my movies are under this format. They are okay, but a tad fuzzy on the Sony, so I decided to use the AppleTV setting and they do look alittle better, however does anyone else have any input on what might be a better setting? Keeping in mind I don't want the file size to get too crazy either. Thanks

Are you ripping DVDs? You can't really expect it to look phenomenal on a 1080p setup. You're virtually limited to the DVD's native resolution and maybe a tad larger.

Are you on the .92 or .93 release of Handbrake? In the .92 release I believe the AppleTV Setting was execellent if you only want to play on AppleTV. However, with this setting you will not be able to play the same movie on your iPhone. For me I chose the IPOD HIRES Setting and upped the bit to 1500 (from 1000, i think). I also dropped the AC3 setting because of my audio setup.

For the .93 I had to setup a custom setting starting with the iPhone and using the 1500 bit setting as before.

There are multiple treads that talk about this a lot. My input is that it really depends on your setup. The better the quality the larger the file size. Also, do you want to play the movie on multiple devices.

I just upgraded .93 yesterday, no I won't be playing these movies on an ipod or another device. Just my MB and Sony TV

I'm not looking for blu ray quality if thats what you think I'm saying, yes I am ripping dvd's.....I just thought because of Handbrake's custom settings there was a setting that produced better results than the ATV setting. Thats all.

HB ATV preset and then run file through MetaX for all your tagging! The quality and file size are acceptable for displaying on a modern HD display.

For the .93 I had to setup a custom setting starting with the iPhone and using the 1500 bit setting as before.

Version .93 has a "Universal" setting that works (apparently, I haven't actually tried the one movie I've encoded at that setting on my iPhone) on all current Apple devices - it ups the resolution to the maximum (640x480 for the movie I encoded) and encodes at 2500 kbps.

Although I've been reinstalling HB each time a new update came out, I only found out about it after updating the presets - Handbrake doesn't fetch new presets automatically.

I used the universal setting last night to re-encode Bambi for my kids - at the scene where Bambi talks to his father in the snow, my previous encoding with iPod Hi-Res + 2000 kbps was very blocky due to lots of moving objects (the snow flakes). The new one is fine. It increased the file size by 20%.

But as Tallest Skil said to the OP, you aren't going to get HD quality out of ripped DVDs.

Edit: Just uploaded to my iPhone - yes, Universal works fine.
