The non smart tv, doesn’t have the ability to connect to the internet, or play films with the use of an app. Can I use the AppleTV for those two needs?
Even being forced into buying a 'smart' TV these days, connecting it to the internet is the last thing IMO from a security standpoint you want to do, which essentially strips out the smartness and turns it into a dumb panel. Otherwise, how else do you rid yourself of all these unwanted voice apps microphone to your life (Alexa & Google) just waiting to be hacked and have some TV maker sniff your programming habits / questioning your lifestyle when the TV is on/off / serving up ads on the screensaver etc, no thanks.
I prefer my panel to be dumb until
bring out their long rumoured TV which will no doubt carry a price tag of at least $10k!?
At the moment with Apple TV you get the benefit of a smart TV without having to worry about any security implications and also mostly all of the apps that already exist on the iOS platform, plus it makes it easier to share/view content from your
device such airplay etc.
If you're thinking of getting one, and a new one doesn't launch with this rumoured product next week, opt for the 4K version, not because you have/haven't a 4K TV, just because the chip in it is faster, more capable and still works with a non 4K TV.
