Now should I just go out and buy a new one
or should I just replace the HDD inside
how much effort is it to replace the HDD? (yeah I know you have open it by ripping the bottom rubber pad off)
Is there an AppleTV OS out there that I could install on a HDD?

A few options

You can do a few things:

1. You can buy a used ATV off ebay.
2. You can buy a new HD kit off eBay. They sell them ready to be installed and pre-formatted all ready to go and you install it yourself.
3. If you don't have a copy of your ATV HD on your own HD then you probably can;t do it yourself.
4. Not sure about the ATV software being downloadable as a torrent.

Does anybody else ever secretly hope this will happens sooner or later? to finally give you that excuse to put a real HDD in your ATV and stop having to use an Itunes server?

Well, I do...

this would be a very nice option, but in the end, for me at least, the size of the library would out grow the storage solution.

If you need help with the partitions, I have backup dmg's. PM me, if you want.

PS. I've successfully done the 250 GB internal upgrade, as well.
