AppleTV Optical Cable newbie question

Hi

I recently bought an optical cable on ebay to attach my Apple TV(3) to my stereo. At least, that's what I thought I could do.

Turns out, somehow the connectors can't connect, eventhough it looks like they should be able to.

Since it's my first time to deal with optical cables, i am not sure whether i use the wrong material.

Can someone help?

Looks like you have the right cable.

If you look carefully you can only put it in one way.

Make sure you check which way you are plugging it in.

erhmm... idiot me: i didn't know the plastic tips at the end were protection

So I tried to put the cables in WITH those detachable taps...

oh my god.. shame, shame, shame
