AppleTV Streaming

Can I do this? I have one computer (Apple iMac), one AppleTV, and one Airport Extreme with a hard drive attached. What I want to do is sync everything from the iMAC to the AppleTV except the movies. I want to stream the movies from my disk attached to my Airport Extreme. AppleTV shows my account can sync AND stream, but I can't figure out how to do it and specify the different locations. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It really has nothing to do with where the content is stored. As long as you can see it in iTunes then you can stream it. iTunes is actually figuring out where to get the data from.

So if you want to have your itunes media in separate areas, then set it up like this and ATV won't know the difference.

As for syncing, select the items to sync in iTunes and it will sync it just like you do for iPods, etc except under the ATV when it shows up in iTunes.

AppleTV Streaming

Still struggling here. If all my movies are stored on a drive attached to the Airport Extreme, how do I point to them in iTunes? iTunes is looking locally for it's media and I can't point to both places. Copying the movies into the local drive defeats the purpose of saving space. I tried to put an ailas for the movies in the local iTunes directory but the movies still don't show up in iTunes. It was my understanding I could sync the small stuff (photos etc) and store the movies on an external drive attached to the Airport Extreme and have iTunes find them. Ichange sources on the AppleTV to "My Library" but the external movies are still not seen. What am I doing wrong?

I'm as clueless as you are, but i BELIEVE I read somewhere on MacRumors that if you hold down the CONTROL key while you drag media into iTunes, that iTunes will not copy the file, but merely bookmark where it resides.

That way, all your movies would still reside on your drive attached to your AEBS, but they'll LOOK like they reside 'inside' of iTunes. Your ATV should see them then.

I'm almost in the exact same boat you are. I have an iMac, an AEBS....and I'm waiting for the new Time Capsule/ATV/Updates to see if i will get an external HD for the AEBS or bite it and get a Time capsule. ATV is next as well.

In iTunes Preferences -> Advanced -> General, uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library", and then add your movies through File -> Add To Library.

Go to iTunes Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when added to Library" option. Now you can drag your movies from Finder and drop them on to iTunes. They will still be stored on your Airdisk, but will be accessible from iTunes.

Once you have your library and hardware configured the way you want, let us know how well it works. Some people who stream content from an airdisk, through iTunes, then to the TV have reported that the movie playback periodically stalls, and this is believed to be because of all the wireless network traffic.

In other words, streamed movie data goes from the airdisk to the computer (iTunes), then from the computer to the TV through the AEBS, so the AEBS has to transmit or receive the data wirelessly no less than three times. Seems that 802.11g networks sometimes have trouble with this, probably depending on bitrate and wi-fi signal quality.
