I have an older HDTV -- 480i/480p/1080i component input only. How will an AppleTV handle 720p files since I cannot use 720p as an input option?

Direct from Apple:

TV compatibility

Just set the Apple TV to output the highest resolution that your TV can accept. If 720p is not an option, go for 1080i. Apple TV and most HDTVs can up- or down- convert the signals between any two formats. Some do it better than others, so you'll need to experiment, if you have the flexibility.

I have 3 HD sources for my 720p HDTV, and it really does not matter what the original programming is in,or what any of them output, the HDTV converts.

I had an older Sony RPLCD that I just sold off for a new Panasonic Plasma.

It would not display 720p either (downrezzed to 480p) and only had Component HD connections.

My :apple:TV worked fine set to 1080i.

Have to mention that :apple:TV looks pretty darn spectacular on the new 58" Panny set to 1080p tho! :D
