AppleWorks 6.2.7 :
AppleWorks 6.2.7 available from online Apple Store
April 19, 2003 - 17:51 EDT__ Several MacMinute readers report that the online Apple Store now has AppleWorks version 6.2.7: "I was just at Apple's Web site and on their store page under 'Apple Software' AppleWorks is listed as 6.2.7 instead of the current 6.2.4, and it also has a new box (all white with just a pencil standing up). When you go to the non store part of Apple's Web site and select 'Software' where it lists all of Apple's software titles and details, Apple Works is still listed as 6.2.4, but has the picture of the new box. I would have to say that an update to Apple Works will be announced very soon. It is unclear though whether or not it will be a free update." No information on improvements or new features in version 6.2.7 is available. _

6.2.7 Hopes for a fix -- font display

One thing I've always HATED about Appleworks -- to the point that I used TextEdit to write anything, is how lousy it looks when I'm typing in word processor mode. (iBook 12").

The font's always look cruddy and difficult to read, no matter what size I make them in zoom or whether I turn aliasing on/off. Awful!

By comparison, typing this comment into my web-browser, TextEdit (anything else!), looks smooth and Mac Beautiful!

Gimme some proper font display in 6.2.7!!

This is true of MS Word as well

I have noticed this problem in MS Word as well. I wondder why that is. In office for Windows it looks like a printed sheet, but not in Office X. Does anyone know why that is?

Entourage seems great in terms of font smoothing or whatever you would call it, even Excel is good at it, but Word seems to suck. Do you think it is the choice and size of the default fonts?

Gid

appleworks 6.2.4 does not support quartz font smoothing. it does use it's own type of font smoothing which really doesn't do anything, it just adds a grey pixel here or there. hopefully 6.2.7 will use quartz smoothing so that it looks pretty (finder clippings and appleworks documents are the only things i use that still display ugly fonts; come on apple!).

i'm assuming that word uses the same kind of butchered quartz font smoothing that ie does which is somehow uglier and blurrier than other apps.

Well, I guess it's good and all that they actually updated Apple Works finally. However, I'm waiting for brand new version that will be as great as Keynote is to PowerPoint. I KNOW Apple has to be working on a great new version...although it may not be called Apple Works. BUT, when they do release it...I'll be there with my credit card in tow!! I do have MS Office X...but wanna rid myself of MS once and for all...and Office is the only thing holding me back.
