Appleworks 7 would be great! 
What features would you like to see? Personally, I'd like to select non-contiguous (sp?) text?

Does that mean that you'd like to select text in a column or some vertically-placed rectangle?
By the way, have any of you looked at Think Free Office? I saw it the other day at the Apple store and it looks pretty good. There's a word processor, a spreadsheet, and a presentation programme. It's all written in Java, so it runs on several platforms and includes Mac OS 9.
For $50, it looked great.
The only thing I'd really like to see, if AppleWorks remains a consumer-oriented programme, is that the presentations could be exported to HTML or Quicktime movies.
I think by non-contiguous text selection, Billicus meant selecting more than one piece of text at once. Maybe.
Appleworks could use some interface updates in OS X. The button bar and document windows need to be Aquafied, and the font rendering needs to be updated to support Carbon anti-aliasing (without Silk). It could also use some stability tweaks... I've had it crash on me a couple times, and crashing is very very very very bad for a word processor. That's all I can really think of. I hope Apple keeps AW as a simple, easy-to-use office suite without a lot of bloat - I like it that way.

seems to me that if Apple are getting together with Sun on Open Office/Star Office then AW will be no more.

I'm thinking AW7 would only be available to Jaguar owners, and Appleworks 6 MIGHT get one last update for OS 9/10.1 users.
I must say, though, I was happier with 6.2.2 than 6.2.4, as 6.2.4 seems to bog down my iMac critically, along with my Cube, but not my iBook.

I'd like to see Apple adopt OpenOffice, then pour an AppleWorks interface into it, and call it AppleWorks 7.0. The name AppleWorks has a fairly good name for itself, while OpenOffice is fairly new with little penetration into any markets but the hardcore computer users.
AppleWorks definitely needs an overhaul now, especially with support from Microsoft on Office waning.

i'dd like to see a total design redraw (n source maybe), n this could be where sun comes in, they could probably provide the source code and have a nice suite of html app/word processing/presentation software/etc all in one (more advanced than the current one) and have a nice simple aqua ui

I have known hat Microsoft Works (PC) is a rival. Version 7.0 my projects organiser is one reason why Apple's is poor. No calendar program (Connect with iCal?) , no quick tours, no syncros with palm pddas/mobil phones (iSync, palm desktop intergration?) Better templates.
They should add:
a my projects organiser (organise projecxts-like a to do list-assign documents to do tasks)
Quick tours
qiuck access to iCal and .Mac

staroffice but with tonnes of apple stuff instead of sun stuff lol (ie get rid of the ugly desktop interface/start bar if there is gonna be one n theres one currently on the winblows/linux versions) n bring in a version thats easy to use, word processing, easy web publishing (with integration to .mac and ftp folders) and easy web page creation, a spreadsheet app, presentation app, integration with mail.app, introduction of an apple browser, with some integration of the browser in the office app (for viewing the webpages), able to easily save it as an office for mac/windows document and reads office for mac/windows documents as if they were created for that app, support for staroffice/corel wordperfect/other popular office appz.

Apple should learn from Microsoft
Personally, I like Appleworks and use it for a heck of a lot. People are amazed at what I do with it. Yeah, Word is even more powerful but I rarely miss that power. Also, I hate how it auto formats so many things by default. However, I like how Word helps with grammer and spelling.
I think Appleworks can be made good enough. Even during their deal with Microsoft, they SHOULD have kept developing a great Office program in house, similar to the x86 project. Now that the deal with Microsoft is done, it is time to reveal that program. Please tell me Apple isn't burning the bridge with Microsoft without having an ace up their sleeve.
Even better, here is what Apple should do. Take a chapter or two from Gate's playbook.

Offer the program for MAC AND PC FOR FREE. Talk about hitting Gates where it hurts. If MS could do that for their Internet Explorer browser, why can't Apple do that for an Office program? Better yet, work with Sun and the open source community to make the program run on all operating systems.
I doubt the government would haul Apple into court for being a monopoly. What would MS do? Change the file formats? Windows users would love that yet again. Why would they upgrade? MS would lose one of their big fat revenue streams.

There is no way that apple's 'office' will be free, if there is one at all. They charge for email, AppleWorks 6, and everything else other then iApps, why wouldn't they charge for this. This is what I think will happen:

I realize that it is already capable of doing so, but what I am saying is that it should be closer to the most recent version of Appleworks, then it is right now.

I don't think it would EVER happen, BUT, if Apple wanted to succeed with their own suite of publishing tools, free for all is the only way to go. For the highest proliferation of the product, it has to be free.
By the way, AppleWorks IS free if you buy one of the consumer model computers. For some reason, the Pro line machines don't come with it.
That being said, AW needs a new update sometime very, very soon. I was glad that the last update fixed the issues with window-size with the dock on the left or right, and the better translation fixes for .doc files, but it is still a little long in the tooth.
