Application Crashes

When it comes to overall application stability (and OS stability) for Mac OS X compared to Windows XP, my experience has been about the same for both of them.

I get application crashes, freezes, hangs, and unexpected quits all the time, on both Mac OS X and Windows. Of course, some applications crash more than others do. However, Mac OS X applications tend to recover from these events more gracefully than Windows applications - most of the time, a Mac OS X application will work normally after crashing if it's simply reopened. Windows applications sometimes work immediately, sometimes need to be restarted twice before working normally, and sometimes require a restart of Windows before working.

As far as operating system failures go, both Mac OS X and Windows have been pretty much rock solid, with 0 blue/gray screens of death reported so far.

Kind of similar for me. I use XP at work and OSX at home and college (studying part time during the week) so I probably end up using both OS's for about the same time each week.

I very rarely have crashes on either system - and in general they tend to be 'gentle' crashes where just the application quits. It's normally pretty easy for both systems to recover from these, and they are about equal in frequency for both machines.

However, in the 5 years that I have been using Macs, I have only had 2 kernel panics (both through the same hardware conflict), whereas over the same period on the Windows machine I have had around 10 full on entire system crashes.

I would say that for me on a day to day basis the stability of the systems are largely the same, but when Windows does go down, it goes down heavier.

XP when looked after, is brilliant. OS X is like a well trained dog. Much like Lassie. You don't really need to look after it. Basic care and attention is required but it's tough enough out of the box.

Hardware wise my Apple experience has been a disaster. Faulty RAM, failed hard drive a few days ago, clicky screen hinge and 2 iPods with the static/distortion fault. I sort of have a grudge but I know they're not widespread problems and Apple are good with helping you out. I have faith in the new upcoming hardware and software.

XP can be a bit annoying at times and so can certain aspects of OS X, but day in day out, I'd far rather use OS X.

That's a good analogy. I believe that anyone can run a problem-free OSX but that's not necessarily the case with Windows.
