iOS application Name in app store

I will be writing my first app shortly, but want to reserve the app name in the app store until I can publish the full binary. is there a way to load anything to hold the app name while I am developing?

Just set up a new app but refrain from uploading a binary.

how long can the dummy app just sit out there? I am an old programmer who hasn't coded in about 20 yrs...gotta go learn the language now...it may take time

Right now, indefinitely. Of course, Apple could always decide to change this policy in the future and start purging such apps.

Yes, you need to be enrolled in the paid program in order to access iTunes Connect, which is where you would set your app up.
