If you have it already installed on an iOS device you can do a simple backup to computer. For example, if the app is on another device, back it up to your MBP, and then install it to your computer. Connect your iPad and install it. Or check your Purchases.
But wait. I tried this with the Instagram app. I have it on my iPad 2nd Gen. but I can't use the one for iPhone. Also, some of the Apps that are no longer available in the apps store will not work with the current OS 11.xxx.
(side note) I've been doing this for years, backing up to my MBP apps that need to be in my iCloud and my MBP. For example, I don't have my Yahoo app backed up to my computer because I'm sure that it will be updated and available in the Apps store. I thought that was a good plan, but the older apps will not work with the current iOS devices.

With the crappy new version of iTunes for computers, we can no longer see our Apps. So I believe you have to manually drag the app (.ipa file) from its location folder in your computer onto your device in iTunes. In order for that file to be in your computer, you need to Backup your device in your computer first. Also, try if the app you want is compatible with the OS version of the device you want to use it in. G'Luck!
Thanks, I’ll try that. I was wondering where the apps went because I was used to seeing them in iTunes but like you said, I guess they took that away. If I can find the folder where they reside I’ll try the drag and drop method and see if that works.
By right, you can still search within your "Purchased" menu in the App Store of your device and redownload the app from there.
But to transfer the app and its data from one device to another (or to simply back all that up somewhere safe in case something happens to your device), you will need a third party solution for situations like this (I am facing this right now). iMazing is a good one that you can try.
Also note that this restoration is a hit or miss for iOS 8.4 onwards as Apple have restricted access to the app data. In this case, jailbreaking your device may be required (and even then, may not work)

YEAH I don't like that. When you click on a link on your Mac to go to the Apps store it gives you a generic screen (non-usable). Before getting a new iOS device, I would look around iTunes to see what apps I would like on the device I'm about to purchase. Its something I would tell those who were wanting to move to an iOS device too. Like download the apps to your Mac and then load them to your device. Apple took the fun out of shopping
lol Oh and you can't look at iPad app on your iPhone either or vise versa.
