Applications not restored from backup!

I backed up my phone and my wife's before I sold them. I just tried to restore both our new 3G s phones from back up and applications that were on the phone did not get restored.

I buy all my apps from my iPhone not my computer. I did not sync any of my apps to my computer. I was under the impression that the phone would be "imaged" during a backup and this would include apps?

Only one app really matters were I entered data and I would like that data restored.

Has anybody restored their phone from a backup of your old one and have the apps show up?

A backup does not back up app data or the apps them self's. What you will need to do is re-download them from the iTunes Store.

Good news is you will not be charged for the apps again as you can download them as many times as you need.

What good are apps that you enter data into that does not come with a seperate desktop component?

Example: I have an app called Car Minder where I enter all the maintenance information for my vehicles. I lost all that history/data when I went to the 3Gs.

A backup of the iPhone should be a "ghost image".

You can now have 11 Pages of apps on the phone. If you fill all of those pages on the iPhone you have 160 apps on your iPhone at once. Now just think of how long that it would to take create a backup file and also how much space that would take up on your computer if you are creating backup after back up.

These apps are not made by apple and they are not reliable for any of the info on the apps. Its just the way it is.

I upgraded to the iPhone 3GS from my iPhone 3G and I can tell you that it saved some information from applications, like my saved Sims 3 data. I don't exactly know how it works, but would be curious to know why my games have kept the saved information.

We back computers up with 250GB hard drives. I don't think 16GB & 32GB iPhones should be any different.

I believe that iTunes only keeps the most recent backup of the iPhone (iTunes only keeps 1 backup on file, not multiple) you would have to resort to an external backup like Time Machine to access previous backups.

With out being able to backup the data in an app, many apps loose become to risky to use in fear that you may loose your data if your device breaks.

iTunes does back up your data. you should have been syncing your apps to your desktop. That way when you restored from a back up you could just resync your apps and all their data would go with them, but since you didn't allow iTunes to transfer your purchases you're SOL.

It's true that I was not syncing my apps with my computer, mainly because my wife and I both received error messages that apps could not be transferred. Maybe this was due to not authorizing the computers (which tech support had me do today as a trouble shooting step)

My apps are now syncing with iTunes. So are you stating that if I do a restore in the future that my apps would be included and the data for those apps would be there too?

Have you personally (successfully) done this?
