Appropiate Handbrake Settings For iPad & iPhone & Mac For iTunes?

So I have numerous .dvdmedia files on my Mac and would love to convert them into iTunes soit could easily sync to my iPad, iPod Touch and even for viewing on my Macbook Pro.

The thing is, I only want one movie file on my iTunes that could cater to each device...I have a movie which went through Handbrake, I believed I used the Apple TV settings which work well for the iPad, but that file in iTunes can't seem to sync into my iPod Touch...plus, its kinda grainy when wanting to watch it in great quality on my MBP.

Anyone got any tips for this current venture of mine?

i use the universal toggle, then goto advanced down on the middle bottom table and select the cbac encoding, to 1

the m4v file on my ipad looks insane.

So iPhone settings and 2 passes of Data in Handbrake? So iPhone settings not only sync up to iPhones/iPod Touch but to iPad as well and it looks sweet? I may have to do this, but I'd also like to watch these movies in iTunes on my MBP..

What's the file size of the movies? I'd imagine no more than 2GB per flick?

Your iPod Touch is going to be the limiting factor here. I believe only the current generation iPod Touches can play movies converted using the TV preset (don't ask me why, just recall reading it somewhere in these forums). If you have a previous gen Touch, stick with the Universal preset--will give you best results for use on all three devices.

I'll test it out thanks

My thinking here is that if the movie quality is really good, then the file itself will be large which would pose a problem on the iPod touch, seeing as it's a smaller screen it wouldn't need such a high quality preset. But seeing it through the other side of the spectrum; if the movie quality is low, hence the file size being low then the movie will look grainy when playing in itunes on my MacBook pro.

I use the default Apple TV setting and am happy with the results on the ATV, MBP and iPad. I haven't tried it on the iPhone because I don't want to watch movies on a screen that small.

Neither do I though there have been times when I'll play a movie when it's hooked up to the dock in my car and Terminator 2 will be playing for my friends to see while I drive.

I'm not too concerned about watching it on the iPhone or iPod touch, I just want to know that should some day I get the iPhone on verizon I'll have option.

Apple TV setting here and quite happy. My standards are pretty high.

Yes, will look stellar on ATV and iPad (and MacBook). For iTouch it'll look no better than the smaller rips you can do. That's the tradeoff here.

On iTouch, I could rip for iPhone and dial the frame rate and audio rate down and still have a phenomenal image on the smaller screen. Average size of movie = 350mb.

On iPad, those rips look fuzzy and blocky so I rip for Apple TV and tweak the frame rate slightly and have a phenomenal image on the larger screens. Average size of movie = 1025mb.

To get the proper quality for the iPad at the minimum file size, you're creating file sizes that are 3x as big. Worth it for the higher resolution iPad screen, a waste of disk space on the low res iTouch screen. So you're left with either a) accepting the fact that your iTouch will be able to hold 1/3 fewer movies or b) ripping movies in both the smaller and larger formats so as to maximize the file sizes for each device.
