As an iPhone user from launch day (first gen), and now an iPhone 3G user (also since launch day), and with a good amount of software developing on my resume, I have a bit of a rant.

I love the iPhone. It's by far my favorite "gadget." It replaced a Blackberry and I'll never look back. I've had BB, WM, Palm, and Symbian "smart" phones, and the iPhone demolishes them all.

So in other words, I'm not a "hater," in fact I'm the opposite.

A few observations, firmware 1.1.4 was very stable. It never crashed on me that I can even remember. The keyboard and everything was very quick, hardly any lag in contacts, keyboard...etc.

Now we have 2.0.1, it crashes slightly less than 2.0, and the apps...

The apps crash all the time, even after a fresh reboot of my phone. I'm not talking about cheapo free ones (which oddly enough, normally run just fine), I'm referring to pay apps.

I use MyWeather ($14.99), MobileChat, Brain Challenge ($9.99), Tuner ($4.99) among others.

Apps shouldn't crash as much. Neither should the phone. But at our current rate, these apps just aren't that great.

I really don't mind the apps crashing, what I mind is when the apps cause my iPhone to get stuck on teh apple loading screen and force me to do a full restore... On my third restore in a week on my 3g and going a bit crazy

I wouldn't rush to blame the apps for crashing- the fact of the matter is the firmware itself is not that stable yet. Add to that the fact that this is a brand new platform and you are going to get some instability until everyone works the kinks out.

A few observations, firmware 1.1.4 was very stable.

And did not allow 3rd party apps. Thus the stability.

It will happen. 2.1 is due in Sept.

Until then we are all in the same boat.

I would sya you're right, but I hacked jailbroke my old phone and never once had to do a restore. Now i'm restoring so much I'm debating the phone

There's no way Apple can test every possible permutation of apps and usage.

Could it be more stable? Sure, and there are things Apple could do to make the next update more stable overall, but less stability is going to be one price to pay for opening it up to limitless configurations in terms of software on the platform.

Why do I get so many low memory warnings? Did they not test apps to release all memory? I mean they are not suppose to run in the background, to save battery, but didn't they think to make sure when you quit an app the iPhone returns to a state that was as good as a fresh restart? How much enery does it take to restart the phone all the time?

Yesterday I had an odd issue with the iPod app 2 or 3 times. I'm litsening to music when it's locked, then I wanted to pick a song. So I push the home button, then slide the lock bar, and just before I can touch a control in the iPod app, I'm popped to the home screen. The music was still playing, so all I had to do was tap the iPod app again. But it happened several more times, I swear I only hit the home button once to wake it.

Safari and Mail eat ram up. Quitting them (hold down home key in the respective app) periodically or rebooting the iphone will free it up. I have seen the error when trying to read a file in file magnet.
