Hi everyone, I seem to have a big problem here. I am currently running 10.3.3 and for some reason everytime I try and save a file the application unexpectedly quits. It doesn't matter what i am running, office, appleworks, it doesn't matter, they all freeze and quit before the save screen ever comes up. Since this has stared (2 days ago) it has done this everytime! Does anyone know what could be causing this??? I did recently install the new security update, could this be part of it?? i have already tried disk utility and repaired the hard disk and the permissions. i would really really appreciate any feedback! Thanks!

I once had a similar thing happen, only it wasn't when I saved a file - it was was right after opening up any application. They would immediately quit. Turned out to be due to the fact that my hard drive was almost completely filled up. When I cleared up some space by deleting a bunch of stuff I no longer used, the problem went away.

I still have 20GB open so that shouldn't be the problem. i am only trying to save office documents so hard drive space shouldn't be an issue. Anyway, thanks for the input.

When trying to diagnose problems like this, it helps to know your computer configuration, what kind, size & number of hard drives, etc. You can help us help you by filling out your profile a little better.
You've probably already done this but, immediately backup all your data preferably onto removable media.
Can you think of any changes you have made to your system, soft or hard, in the last week? Up grade anything?
You may need to reinstall Panther after backing up all your data and Applications, etc. Pay particular attention to your User file, Documents folder, Microsoft Data, Pictures, iPhoto data, iTunes, etc.

What bothers me (and you too, probably) about your problem is that it is not focused on just one application. You already got excellent advice for this kind of problem from Invizzible, that would have been an easy solution. Damn! Plus, you've already repaired permissions.

RAM? Amount, any recent changes, etc.?
AGE & size of each hard drive.

I'd also suggest creating a new user and seeing if the problem occurs there. Although this won't immediately fix the problem, it will narrow down it's source.

I suspect that there's some corrupt settings file somewhere that contains information that the save dialog uses. I'm not sure what the file could be though. It might help to do a search in Finder for files that were modified around the time the problem started.
