A couple of months ago I decided I wanted a fresh machine. I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro Retina 15'.

I did the fresh install by holding CMD+r while rebooting. Deleted the partition and formatted a new partition as per directions on https://support.apple.com/kb/ph21973?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US

All went smooth. After a while, I started to notice apps Reminders, Calendar, Excel, heck even the Settings would just hang. I would force quit and think nothing of it. But this has become a regular thing.

So I reinstalled again. And again. And again. Same problem.

This is my work machine. I need it to work. When apps like Excel hang on the Save dialog box and I have to reboot to get them working properly again, in a business setting this doesn't fly.

First I thought it was iCloud account that is why Reminders and Calendars were hanging. But Excel and Numbers too. Sometimes Numbers wont even start. It would hang on the start.

So frustrating. What is going on here?

Are you using OS X 10.11.4? This version is just a disaster on app freezing.

It's possible that your Mac's internal disc drive is failing.

Please do the following:

Note: The following procedure must be performed on an OS X user account that has administrative privileges.

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Enter the following:

diskutil info /dev/disk0; syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message RCeq "(corestorage|disk\d+(s\d+)?|jnl):" -k Time ge -1w
  3. Include the contents of the Terminal window in a reply to this post.

But right after my MacBook SSD being replaced, OS X 10.11.4 still gives me a frozen system two day after.
On the contrary, OS X 10.11.2 doesn't even freeze a bit, 30 days in a row.
OS X is also responsible, although I do believe Apple may replace my SSD with refurbished ones.

officelurker, the output doesn't indicate that your disc is failing, which isn't surprising considering you have a solid-state disc drive.

1. What peripherals, if any, do you keep connected to your Mac?

2. Do you regularly access files on networked devices?

3. When the issue next occurs, examine the latest entries in the system log for clues. (You can view the system log using Console.)

Shirasaki, which is freezing — OS X or your applications? Additionally, see point 3 above.

Thanks for replying back. I connect a USB scanner sometimes. I doubt that is the problem. I don't access network devices...unless Dropbox counts.

I will keep an eye put on the logs.

OS X. Or apps. Maybe both. What I can see is sometimes all apps, including finder, freeze, but system clock goes as usual. CPU goes 100% and stays there forever. And some other times, system clock just stop going.

Update: I took the Macbook Pro to the apple store. Genius bar ran some diagnostics tests. All came clean.

They also reinstalled El Capitan fresh on it. So far no problems. Laptop also seems zippier and some lags I experience before are gone. But let's wait and see.

One thing I will mention: a few months ago I did a fresh install, It gave me the option when creating a user account, to login into the laptop using my iCloud password. But the past few times I did a fresh install, that option was gone and I had to select a new password for my login and it was 10.11.4

After Apple reinstalled El Capitan for me today, that option came back. It's still 10.11.4.
