Hi,

All trying to use Apps on the IPAD - make use of the bigger screen.

However, the apps below are coming up as Portrait only, with restricted viewing options - same as the Iphone apps.

I have a Magic keyboard, and want to view in Landscape more, with more optinos than the restricted mobile version of apps.

Apps with this issue:
STRAVA
WIGGLE

I’ve checked the App Store, no IPAD equivalent option for the above apps
Any advice would be appreciated. Please advise! :)

Regards
Martin

Thanks B,

Ooohhhh that is crap!

Strava and Wiggle are big main stream web sites - what gives?!

I’ll try them in the browser

The apps are supposed to be used when you’re running, biking etc. It’s safe to say their major use case is iPhone situation.

Depending on how the original app was written, it might not be as easy to knock up a iPad version.

The worst offender imho is Instagram. They genuinely have a use case of iPad support but unbelievably they still don’t do it.

If you are going to use the Safari browser version Martin, you could always select share and save the web versions of the two sites as icons on your Home Screen.

Hi B,

That is a good idea!

I have been creating favourites or whatever you call them in Safari - but the drop downs are getting a bit clogged up with paraphenalia

Hi A,

Will the move to ARM make it easier for developers to produce ipad versions of apps?!

Be good to have use of the larger screen, rather than the same screen as the iPhone, but on a ipad screen(?!)

NB:
The Wiggle website is a shopping app only for sports.
Strava web site shows more info that the mobile app. Be nice to see that in the app for ipad.
Oh well

Moving to ARM for macs have no bearing on this. It’s essentially down to the cost vs benefit when it comes to developing apps for both iPad and iPhone.

Having both flavours of the UI requires extra resources of design, development and testing. The 2 companies you’ve mentioned probably don’t see the need for it and if someone really wants to see more data then as you mentioned they have the website available for larger screens for that.

More often than not these decisions are based on real life user data and focus groups / surveys with a minimum target, if the responses from the users aren’t good enough then the extra cost just doesn’t make sense for businesses.

The prime example of this, as I mentioned earlier, is Instagram. Their website is horrible as well and they probably genuinely benefit from having and iPad app with native code support but I’m sure the data points to the other direction given the number of iPads out there compared to the iPhones. Also more and more of their features are based on instant sharing which is more geared towards phones than tablets.

Hi A,

Damn, I was hoping:

1. ARM MacBooks opening up these 2 apps, the app are portrait again for user

2. There is an uproar of derision. The App gets sorted by the owners.

3. And then - IPADs can ride off the back of this and run the improved MAC apps!

... you know what - I’m still hoping! :p
