Apps running excessively in background

There are quite a few apps that are draining my battery by running in the background when I have Background App Refresh disabled for most apps - and it's disabled for all the apps I'm talking about here.

Anyone else experiencing the same?

Background app refresh is just one aspect of an app being able to do something in the background. By default all apps are able to perform limited things (at least in terms of time) in the background if they have been opened at some point, and that isn't controllable by the user (aside from basically closing the app after use). What apps are you seeing this with?

I don't think it's possible to disable (at least in settings.app) apps ability to do start background threads like background audio. Those are down to use. Background App Refresh is a thing where apps that aren't being actively used can wake up periodically and perform fuller actions like, say, update your RSS feeds for a feed reader.

If you're having a battery life issue the place to start is Settings -> Battery and see what's eating it.

These are my battery stats. Kik and Snapchat (and Yellow) are killing my battery in the background when Kik and Snapchat have Background App Refresh disabled and Yellow does not even have a toggle for Background App Refresh.

That kind of thing won't really be affected baby background app refresh. You might want to make sure those apps don't have location access or microphone access so they couldn't use that to run indefinitely in the background. Perhaps some settings within them to minimize usage as well. Alternatively you might want to close them after using them.

Could you post those all the way down to Usage and Standby?

You might want to make sure those apps don't have location access or microphone access so they couldn't use that to run indefinitely in the background. Perhaps some settings within them to minimize usage as well. Alternatively you might want to close them after using them.

iOS pauses apps in the background within seconds, does it not? It would seem kind of useless to kill apps since I would then need to use more resources to reopen said apps.

I think something is just wrong with how long the apps stay alive in the background in iOS 10.0.2.

I recently shut off my phone so those numbers are useless right now. I will do so tomorrow when I have more reliable numbers.

I could tell you right now, my phone does fine in standby. It's the usage number (usually around 5-6 hours) that somewhat bothers me.

iOS normally allows apps up to about 10 minutes to finish some tasks in the background after foreground use. That said various apps that use some location, or microphone, or sound/music playback, or calling (VoIP), or a few other similar features are allowed to run in the background in a more indefinite way. Facebook has been known to abuse that before through some VoIP or sound playback use. Seems like some other similar apps can potentially do something like that too.

Usage, as a number, isn't very telling. Usage can mean reading a book downloaded in ibooks or playing an intensive game. Some of it is background work too. In your case it seems its a bit of gaming and kik in the background. I don't have or use kik so I'm not sure if that's normal for it I'm afraid.
