I hate when apps require you to leave your location on at all times? Sorry for the ignorant question but this consumes more battery than apps that just use location when being used. How much battery is used by apps using location services in the background even when not being used?

It really depends if they are actually using location beyond when they are running. In many cases those apps aren't really using location outside of when they are running, so it doesn't make much of a difference. In cases when they might be, that could potentially use up some more battery. There are some apps that haven't been updated to allow for location service to only be used when they are running and not all the time (even if they might only be using it when they are running), and there are those that prompt you to give them access to use the services all the time, but you can change it to only work while they are running.
