I just updated my iPad Air Gen 1 from iOS 9.whatever to iOS 10.1.1. I have noticed slight hesitation in response to my input on two apps in particular: Shredder Chess and Optime Sudoku. Before the update, both responded instantly when I touched the screen. In the case of Shredder, giving focus to the cell I touched; in the case of Shredder, moving a piece. Now with iOS 10.1.1 there is sometimes, but not always, a slight hesitation in the response. It is very disconcerting.

It's as though the OS is doing stuff in the background and when I touch the screen it takes it a moment to respond.

Is iOS 10 doing stuff in the background that iOS 9 was not doing, eating resources, and is there a way to turn that stuff off? Or is the iPad Air Gen 1 just not fast enough for the bloatware added to the latest OS?

It's a real dilemma because I always want to keep up with the latest security updates, but each new OS puts more of a strain on the resources of older hardware.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

No help, sorry. You're right, iOS 10 takes more resources. 10 isn't very smooth on it, even with disabled transparency. You could disable some stuff but from 9-year experience with iOS and writing two books on it, the difference will be rather small if noticeable at all.

I have noticed as well. Some heavy apps feel sluggish now. One of my most-used apps – The Guardian – takes ages to load and I am not sure why.
