Just bought an iMac yesterday and am new to Apple. The apps and Icons won't open when I click on them. I can open menus on finder and the Dock. Did i shut something off? Thanks

what does happen when you click on an app in the dock? or what happens when you try to open one from the application's folder?

Is it only the apps that won't open? Are the folders opening?

Is it all apps?

Nothing on the Desktop will open including the HD

Since it's a new computer, I suppose the best way of getting rid of this problem (and maybe others that you haven't discovered yet) is to reinstall OSX from the supplied Restore disks.

It doesn't take very long. :)

I have spent the weekend moving files from my PC and setting up various preferences. Will I lose all that? Don't have a back-up disk drive

If it's not feasible, we can work on another solution but this seems like a pretty strange problem. I'd recommend reinstalling everything at this stage. However, you will lose everything that is not backed up.

Finally called Apple support and they tried a lot of things. Said they had never seen the problem before. Re-imaged with the archive disk and that fixed the problem
