Distribute to up to 100 iPhones, does anyone really understand what the purpose of this is or how it works? Can't you already distribute to as many iPhones as you want using the "normal" store? Sorry, confused.

I was thinking and kind of hoping it would be somewhat like the enterprise license but limited to 100 people. So maybe if you had a small business or just an app that you and your friends wanted to use that would make little sense to anybody else you could distribute it this way. That's my guess.

It's mainly for developers to beta test their apps. Sign up for the $99 program, and you'd get the right to test your app on 100 iPhones.

maybe this is a method for companies to share proprietary software.

Ad Hoc does require the $99 fee to be paid by the person who wants to distribute their app.

Do you have a reference for that? I didn't hear that during the keynote, and it wouldn't make sense given the example they gave (teacher/students) or the fact that you may as well then register as an enterprise developer, pay a little more, and have a heck of a lot more flexibility.

I'm basing it on the fact that the (incomplete) interface for Ad Hoc distribution is just another tab in the iPhone Dev portal that you have to pay to get access to.
