I think that the AppStore for the iPhone / iPod Touch is great. Well organised and easy to navigate, I nearly always find what I want.

This got me thinking, would it be good for Apple to make a version of the AppStore for native OSX applications? Similar to the way iTunes music store works on your mac, but for applications. It would make finding applications far easier and also easier for the application manufacturers to promote their application.

Does anyone agree?

The only problem is that Apple takes a 30% cut for every app it sells in the App Store.
Now if this also happened in OS X, you can see where there would be problems.
Also, the App Store is the only way to get apps on the iPhone/iPod Touch.
This is different than Mac OS X.

If it happens, it will probably be optional, you can get software from other avenues.

And give Apple control of what you can install on your Mac, hell no!

They already have http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ which is kinda an optional app store.

Give Apple control? Highly doubt it considering we'd have teh Tubes™

See: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/

That's the optional OS X App Store.

Yes, that I agree with. However, it would be best if Apple did an App Store like approach. Having an application that consolidates, searches and indexes and even has a check out in case its a paid app. I mean, its a good idea; but I would be against it if Apple tried to manipulate it.

However like I said, we've go teh Tubes™

Yes, that is my point. If we were to have anything more like the App Store, we would have to give Apple control of what we can and can't install (or we'd have to jailbreak our Macs). It's a ridiculous prospect.

I wouldn't mind if it were optionally which there's a 99% chance it would be if they did it, but it could evolve into complete control which would be HORRIBLE.

There are some pros, however.
1. Apple gives us the usual great experience when we want apps, and it would probably be integrated with iTunes.

2. Developers have an easy way to SELL apps for macs, not just put them up for download. This is the point I'm especially happy about for the iPhone. On the mac, I'd have to pretty much set up my own servers and stuff to sell an app. I don't mind giving Apple 30% to handle it for me.

3. Consumers can find what they want much more easily. There are sites like versiontracker or macupdate, but an official Apple store would likely attract much more software, making it more likely that what you want will be in the same place.

I can't think of any more right now.

The reason why the App store is the only avenue for official software on the iphone is before it, there were no other official means to get native apps, I mean web apps were there but those aren't native. If a Mac store was to be introduced, it would be optional because there are other official ways go get software onto the Mac that came before it. I think it would be a great idea for most people and would make it easier for them but won't be the only avenue for software on a Mac.

I would love a Mac App Store, with a payment system tied into my iTunes account. That would be much easier than using paypal or signing up for some sort of store program.

Its a great idea that exposes software to far more people. I expect this feature to be announced at WWDC and I'll be not very happy if that doesn't happen.

I think its definitely a great idea and I really hope that it happens. Having said that, if they have a kill switch on the Mac too then I won't be very happy.

I hope it would be like Linux... where you just choose an app. Download it for free and install it yourself.

Simply an online app search to help people find an app without going to google.

I want the freedom to install myself because i want to see the source code and eat cracker jacks.
