Dear all,
what happens when users are updating an app, if they got the app for free, but the new app version is now paid (the app has been discontinued to be free and changed to price tier 1).
- they do get the update free
- they are prompted and charged for the update?
- another option that I don't know about

Thanks for any info
Meik

The App Store currently doesn't have a way for App Developers to charge different for a new user vs a current user. That would be a nice feature.

sorry i dont get it.
so i downloaded a free app. then a update comes out and it shows as 2.99 or something...will it charge me for this update ? since i got it for free before..

All upgrades are free for existing customers.
Some developers released paid upgrades but they actually were new apps not upgrades.
This statement is false.

The upgrade pricing depends solely on the developer. You could've got XXX 1.0 for free. But if the developer decides to make XXX 1.1 a paid upgrade, then you do have to pay for it. Simple.

TIP: Be sure to read the app description and see whether an upgrade is free or not.

PBF, trust me, I know what I say. A developer may have named the app XXX 1.1 but if you have to pay it even if you already own the app then it's really a new app not an upgrade for XXX.
This "paid upgrades" thing is something I discussed with Apple back in late 2008 shortly after the AppStore opening.
I think that developers should be able to decide to release a paid upgrade if they want but at the moment they can't. This unfortunately means that for some (probably successful) apps at some point you'll see "XXX 2" new apps instead of "XXX" 2 upgrades. And I think that for the same reason you see different iPhone and iPad version for some successful apps.

If you have the app then upgrades FOR THAT APP are free.
