Apricorn velocity duo SSD RAID upgrade

So next upgrade for me will be a Apricorn velocity duo card to fit my Samsung 840 EVO 500gb in my cMP4.1, shortly to follow by a another SSD for a striped RAID array.

Here is the thing. Looking at EVO drives the 840 EVO have been superseded by the 850 EVO and the new drives are cheaper even though they are newer? I don't get this. Options are.
Get older + more expensive 840 disk
Try get used 840 disk (used ssd's?)
Use 840 + 850 Ive always thought using identical discs are preferred

Please tell me what you think?

BTW Does anyone know if there software to set up Stripe RAID on this card using a mac now? or do i have to set it up on a PC?

Just get a 850, there is no need to get 2 identical drive for RAID

Ok thanks. The "no need" part does that matter what RAID level is used. Im planning to use RAID 0 (striped) and i can understand this doesnt require identical drives. But what if i would go for a RAID 1 (mirroring) would it be advisable to have identical then?

You have always been able to use Apple software RAID in Disk Utility or http://www.softraid.com is also a higher end (better) software program.

If it was me looking for high performance I would be looking at other types PCIe-SSD that offer more than double SSD (XP941 and the like M.2-type).

JBOD is also fine if it is larger storage and happy with 550MB/sec instead of RAID0.

I switched out my aging 128gb crucial m4's for the newer 240gb m500s in my striped array. Speeds shot up from 550MB/s to around 750-800MB/s using the duo. I've always found crucial to be rock solid under OS X. I'm sure Samsung would be equally stable. The 850 PRO is the way to go, but 850 EVO have been rating very well if you're on a budget.

Avoid the 840 like the plague. The 850 is stellar. I just installed the Apricorn in my 4,1 and it was plug and play. No need for the pro version rather than evo unless you will hit it constantly for years.
