I don't think you know what the difference between Ubuntu and Android is. Ubuntu is not a skinned version of Android. The hardware (aka the phone in this case) is the same as the Android version sold by this Spanish company, but the OS is completely different.

Supposedly the Miezu MX4 will also have an Ubuntu option a little later on. That could push it mass market.
According to your link its dead. Canonicalhas been talking about a convergence device for a very long time these two Ubuntu phones are the first step to making that happen. My problem is I don't really like Android or iOS I wanr my phone to be a mini computer and I want it to be truely open source Red Hat and Canonical are the only companies to be able to really make that happpen.
I wouldn't call it dead yet. It's been halted for now, but I'm still optimistic that they'll find a backer to help with the final stages of development and launch.
It's just like Android, except it uses a different kernel, different packaging system, different windowing manager, and different everything else. But other then that...
Same kernel, different everything else. Android and Ubuntu are all Linux.

Doesn't Android use a vesrsion of the that's different from Ubuntu? I thought that Google's Android kernel was a more ... custom one that they make.
As far as I know, they've left the kernel practically untouched. The only difference between Android, and the desktop distros, such Ubuntu, Fedora, or Arch is that it's got a bunch of Google specific APIs stacked on top of it.
Keep in mind the way Linux is licensed. Google can't take all the work the Linux Foundation has done, and fork it without giving anything back. Any changes they make to it have to be open sourced and documented for everyone else to use.

I don't think they're using the common kernel just yet.
I think they do, albeit with some slight tweaks here and there to make it a little more mobile friendly. The kernel is about the only thing it has in common with all the desktop distros though, so you really can't consider it "Linux" in the classic sense of the word.

Android is Linux in much the same way that OSX is Mach/Free BSD.
Jeebus I've been watching some youtube reviews of the phone I now don't think I want to wait, I think I'll just sign up for the flash sales! This phone is pretty cool and the philosophy is even cooler.
