Given that the only device to support AR Emoji is the only just announced S( series, it's going to be kinda hard to really say!

Apple's Animoji's are available now and users have full experience in using them. Samsung's AR Emoji are still just a presentation.

On paper Samsung's concept could seem to be better than Apple's but until it's in the wild (mid March) any answer you're going to get is going to be totally subjective based upon one presentation.

I have used my Animoji like twice on my iPhone X. Not something that I would use apart from to send my cousins happy birthday with it to make them laugh. Shows how little use it holds.

I imagine this might be fun for kids or teenagers but maybe this is who these companies are targetting

When I had the iPhone X for 2 weeks I sent a few Animojis a few times. But as you said it does get old after a few times.

The face tracking on AR Emoji doesn't look as fluid and realistic as Apple's approach, the good thing about AR Emoji is that it has way more options to customize, can be sent in every Messaging App (It saves as a video in the Gallery I guess?) and is integrated in the Camera App.
If Samsung improves the AR Emoji with better facial tracking, I'm sure it can really be a though competition for Apple's Animoji if it's not abandoned this year and the next.

I guess I am just too old but I wouldnt ever use regular emojis and certainly not this, I wouldnt even as a teenager. I could see how kids and especially girls would like this stuff though, they remind me of the Xbox avatars

Concept of Samsung’s are better and the fact that it can be used with any message app is good. However I don’t use animoji’s and I doubt I would use AR emoji either. However on the surface I think Samsung’s are better.

From the video reviews I've seen so far ....... Yes, AR emojis seems better than Animojis.

Animojis are extremely limited. Sure the iPhone X uses 3D tracking versus the S9/S9+ just using the camera, but from the video reviews I've seen, it's nothing but a settle difference. The quality of AR emojis tracking is still damn good.

AR emojis is already way more robust than Animojis, out the box. And more 3rd party developers will create for it.

Are you sure about that last sentence?

Yes, but Samsung teamed up with Messenger and Whatsapp so instead of using the emojis built in the app (I use them very often) you could use your own. But...we need to try that first and see if it does get old quick as Iphone X or not ;)

My husband has been spamming me with Bitmoji lately to show me what they are. (I’d heard of them but didn’t know what they were.) Judging from what I’ve seen of the Bitmoji, I think AR Emoji will be more useful because they can also be used like stickers for people who might want a static cartoon representation of themselves rather than sending a generic talking or frowning poop.

They both seem gimmicky to me but between the two, AR Emoji promotes personal creativity, sorta of like Android home screen and theming personalization, and has better branding than the canned Animoji. It solves the Be Different issue with Animoji when everyone in the group chat decides to use poop.

No. Animoji actually tracks a 3D model of your face. AR Emoji just has a fixed (albeit long) list of recognisable emotions.

Granted I'm not an expert on these gimmicks but I thought I saw videos where they mentioned Animoji doesn't recognize winks while AR Emoji can. That's like one of the top universal facial gestures.

it could be potentially be a bitmoji replacement for me. I like bitmoji a lot b/c you do not need to express or act and it's so simple to send. I wish they do an iMessage / Facetime replacement. that'd be more useful.

I do agree that Animoji seems more accurate. But I wouldn’t mind seeing Animoji that can be customized like an avatar. Some ppl make fun of Samsung’s Nintendo like gimmick. But I actually would like to be able to make my own Animoji, customize it. And send it to other ppl.

If I want a cartoon of myself then Samsung is the winner. If I want an Emoji of me that is similar to the XBox or Nintendo Wii characters, then Apple is the way to go.
