iOS AR SDK with object detection crazy?

Maybe I'm looking for the grail, but would like to find a AR Sdk that detects object on a plane.

So if I had a table it would recognize cups or things on the table and allow a character to go behind those things. Is this impossible?? or just REALLY difficult?

ps. I have no idea how I this stuff works so, pretend I don't have a PHD in computer science, instead of an art degree.. Hahaha!!!

To answer your question no it is not impossible, and difficulty is relative. There are numerous augmented reality sdks for ios. Here is one and they have an example of exactly what you are talking about.
