I am not asking about doing any email hosting.
But I am looking at changing my email provider and realising I do not need a 10GB+ single mailbox only accessible on a remote server via IMAP, for emails more than DD/MM/YYYY (I choose the date, obviously). This will mean my family could fall under Zoho Free Plan, at least initially.
What is the best method to archive my domain's mailbox locally? Is this as simple as using the "Export Mailbox" menu option? Is the MBOX format standard among other software? Outlook has its own document format. Is there a standard?
After exporting, I would like to upload to my local network's cloud appliance, currently using Nextcloud? I would like an equivalent "email app" here that is only able to offer lightning fast and accurate searches across this ENTIRE archive, highly configurable, great UI.
So any time I search, I check my active devices first. Then I access a 2nd app to search this "local cloud" archive, which I would hope would offer significant performance improvement.
