going to upgrade my early intel 20" imac very soon(maybe even today) really want the 24 but have read off all sorts of problems with them. why would they be any different to the 20" imacs if the only difference is the size of screen??
not sure if ive put that very well but basically is the 24 worth the extra ££££

Nothing wrong with my 24" iMac, the screen is better, so people say, can't beat a big screen, I considered the 20" but went for the 24" as I always felt I would regret it if I didn't.

There will probs be new iMacs in january, if you really want to buy now then check the refurb section on Apples site to save some money.

I've not had a single problem with mine - the screen is awesome and much better quality than the one on the new 20" iMacs (not sure about the one you have).
Reading reports of problems on online forums is never a particularly good guide because most people only post about their machines when they have a problem.

I really do want to buy one but the big question is will there be a newer model come macworld???

Really? Not sure how up to date or accurate your info is - the 24 has been quite stellar. I love mine.

The question to ask yourself is to what end will you be using your iMac? I do a lot of photo editing, didn't want to fork over the clams for a macpro + monitor, so I cheated and got a giant 24 iMac. No regrets. NONE.

Good luck.

The imac is a truly great machine! But will probably get major changes in the next revision, so Im holding out until Jan-Feb!

LED Backlighting is one reason alone to wait! Brighter screens, that don't yellow or dim with age. Even across the whole screen and incredibly crisp mmm! :)

Also the internals should adopt a 4 core architecture and faster Ram!

Basically being even better performer than it already is!!!

Buy it now, if the LED Backlighting is not a major issue for you.

And enjoy the awesomeness of the 24" . Don't bother with the 20" I would be disappointed coming from a previous generation iMac. Screen is

My 24" iMac

Got an 18 month old 24"iMac, except for a failed H/D, I love the large screen.
Although I wish I had one of the newer ones and the better video card.
I guess it depends on what you can afford, how much you use it and what you do on it.
Good luck

I've read more forum posts where people have problems with the 20's than the 24's.

I love mine and haven't had any issues with it. The screen is a dream.

Had mine for a year now (24" alu 2.4Ghz 4GB) and it has worked flawlessly since day 2. On day 1 it greyscreened on me (The "You must reboot" screen) and after that - not a single issue with it. And I am a power user. Fantastic machine.

Wrong and wrong. Sorry.

OP - I'll bet you $ you'll find the newer screens inferior to the screen on your 20" CD. (it had better contrast and richer color than the new ones - and I've got both)

And leds DO fade and color shift. I don't know who started this myth - but it's just that, a myth. They change intensity over temperature and over time.

I don't think so. I bought a mini and a decent 24" monitor for less than a $1000. Love the combo and possibilities.

This was back when the mini was recently updated.

"...the screen is awesome and much better quality than the one on the new 20" iMacs"

I don't know about that, Paul. I have both, and prefer each for different uses, as we have a business that we use them in. I wouldn't say either is better than the other. We have 3 20's, 2 24's, and (I think) it's a 17 (one of the first round of intel iMacs:)) I've never had a screen problem with any of them. The 17 is on every day, 12-15 hours a day, Monday thru Saturday. It is over 2 years old and still looks great!

I do LOVE the size of the 24, but in some cases, it is too big:) Seriously, in cases where I have to sit a bit closer in the field, the 20, hell, even my 15" MBP is a better choice.

One reason to go with the bigger screens is also the video card, the chance to game a bit more (or with Windows/BC).

I wouldn't say the Nvidia choice is necessarily the better choice, especially if you are doing Photoshop/Final Cut/etc. There isn't going to be any performance gain in creative apps, and in some cases, it can have a negative effect.

That said, I love the iMac line. Since buying them for our business (replacing expensive laptops) my Mac Pro has been neglected! They're awesome computers, for sure. If you have a 20 right now, you have an Intel iMac, right? Therefore, there should be NO reason to upgrade right away. You may as well wait to see if something changes in January. Even if you decide to stick with the older (2008) version when they release, you will be able to save a bundle in the refurb store when the new ones drop.

Peace
J
