I wish they would allow something like iPod games - so developers could make apps, but Apple would have to approve them, so not to detract from the iPhone's stability...

Before long, we could have Adium, Skype and others :)

Adium is an OSX Open Source multi-protocol (AIM, MSN, Yahoo! Jabber, etc.) chat client. It's the best. I've been using it for Yahoo for about 2 years now and it keeps getting better.

Find it here.

That is what I thought Apple was going to do before they annouced that they weren't going to support 3rd party apps at all. I figured they were going to create an apple certified program where you could submit your app to them and they would certify it and only then would it be able to run on the iPhone.

You visit them in iPhone Safari. No install needed (or possible, for that matter!)

well the drawback is you have to host them somewhere and have to be connected to the net.

Apple fullfilling microsoft's dream, NOT.

My guess is that the iphone was rushed into production, maybe that rumor about pushing it to October had some truth, but apple knew it ran out of time.

What I think you'll see, and its not that hard to do , is somekind of local caching scheme for the app. Load it once from the internet like those god awful activeX controls and than its in your application cache until the app on the web is updated. since ajax apps are fairly simple in construct , I would not be surprisedd to see this very soon.

I would not expect this very soon, to implement ichat means that apple will have to port bounjor to the iphone, which is a pretty big classlib, am saying they won't , but I don't think you will see it until they have a local itunes client.

But I could be wrong.
