Do We know the speed of the M1 processors, is the ipad Pro M1 likely to be the same or similar speed to the Mac mini M1 or the new iMac M1

Same speed, but probably significantly lower sustained performance. It's unlikely Apple installed any kind of heatsink in the iPad Pro. In most cases, shouldn't matter on iPadOS.

This is a great question, I'm curious too... I'd bet it's the same chip but at a lower operating speed and lower wattage. I mean, in the Mini it draws something like 26 watts at load... (which is impressive for a desktop of course) but the current iPad Pro A12 only draws something like 15 watts at load.

Incredibly unlikely they've adapted the iPad to compensate for an increase in consumption and heat output by 35% or so. Expect it to be slower.

the fanless MBA draws less, so I don't see why the iPad cannot run at the same speed

Good point, the Air appears to max out around 30watts of total consumption and then often coasts under typical work loads in the mid 20s.

Its possible the iPad could handle that sort of range as well, especially as the iPad pro has a bigger battery. That all considered however, if the M1 were allowed to run with similar consumption in the iPad it would more than likely impact the battery life when compared directly to the previous generation iPad Pro, it would also more than likely get hotter to the touch than the older generation.

I'm not sure Apple would allow that, so I would bet the M1 in the iPad Pro will be clocked lower than in the Air, but by how much? Who knows.

Your point is a good one though, I haven't considered the relationship between the fanless Air and the Ipad Pro before.

Was wondering the same thing, and I dont think it will run at the same speed. Look at the redesigned fans they added on the new M1 iMacs. On such a big body and they still need fans. Had the M1 MBA briefly and the M1 MBP for months now. MBP runs cool generally but can definitely get warm at load. MBA got warm much quicker. No way the IPP pro, with its much thinner body, can run same speeds without it getting really hot, I think.

I am sure it is the same piece of silicon, for the package, we'll have to wait and see what the teardown will show us.
And as for speed etc, it's SW/FW controlled ...

If it's actually the same M1, wouldn't it likely run many of the apps that are currently being ported to the Mac M1 lineup if the app developers coded it to run on iPadOS???

Slightly downclocked M1 SoC I reckon, with worse sustained performance (given the iPad chases, etc). Either way, it will be an absolute weapon.

Interestingly enough, the M1 on the $1299 iMac is the lower end version with 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU versus 8/8 on the iPad Pro.

Thermals will dictate performance though. Burst is likely similar. Sustained would go to the Macs.
