I've just called the closest five Apple stores and none of them have gotten any of the 24" 2.8 Ghz iMacs in and show no plans to at present...anybody else finding this to be true?

It's a Build To Order, so no Apple Retails Stores will stock them - web only.

I'm at little confused, though. If it's considered build to order, then why does the online Apple store list it as the top of the line stock configuration?

It's actually an upgrade option on the 2.4 as well.

Right, which would definitely make it a CTO order...I ordered the 2.4 with the processor upgrade but wound up cancelling it because I was a little nervous about Apple's "no return policy" on the custom orders. The 2.8 appears to be a stock configuration-I don't see any indication that it is considered a CTO...but maybe I'm missing something..?

The only policy I know is that an Apple RETAIL store will not accept returns from a WEB purchase.

I don't know where it says in in the policy but i have read in numerous posts that if you order a custom made computer you cannot return it unless there is a problem e.g. DOA or dead pixel etc.
If you definately plan on keeping your computer then this really should not be a problem because it will be the same as on a normal order except you just don't have that first 2 week(i think) period where you can return it unopened.

I thought Apple didn't consider a dead or stuck pixel reason for replacement...at least unelss there were several of them-especially with a CTO order...?

Okay - well looking at the T&C's for the UK, the policies differ in that there isn't a specific clause for CTO builds.

Well, I just took the plunge and ordered the 2.8 "stock" configuration from the online Apple store :D ...and it does indeed say "custom configuration" on the order...strange!

So, I'm thinking that since I didn't make any additional changes to this model that the standard return policy should apply to this order...?

A 2.8 will ALWAYS be a CTO. It has been mentioned several times on this forum.

Not true-I just got off the phone with an Apple CSR and the 2.8 Ghz model is not considered CTO (at least in terms of their return policy) unless you add an upgrade such as the HD or RAM.

2.8 iMac not a CTO

Last week there were 1 or 2 2.8 iMacs in Chestnut Hill, MA at least 1 of which had the 1 terabyte drive. At least, that's what they told me they had but they don't always impress me when their knowledge. However, the Burlington, MA store did get a bunch of them. Alas, when I arrived at the store on Sunday the 13th during tax free weekend, they had sold out of every 24 inch machine that was not out on display. They told me that not only was every 24 inch iMac sold out in MA, they were sold out company wide. Also, it is my understanding that although it comes up as a CTO while you wait (endlessly), it is indeed a "stock" configuration. I have also heard that some stores are ordering at least a few of them (2.8s) to have on hand.

My local reseller is planning to order a few of these in so that they have them in stock, so I'm sure others will do the same. Problem seems to be getting hold of these just now, when you combine the BTO and the shipping time from Shanghai, they're taking a while to get through.

If you buy a CTO iMac and decide to return it, you have to send it directly back to Apple rather than going to a retail store. If the machine is dead or whatever, you can return it to a store.

However, the 2.8 is the top stock option. Therefore, as long as you don't upgrade the RAM or HDD, you can take it to an Apple store to return it. As it happens, one of the stores near me in MA had a handful of them in stock initially but sold out of them within a few days of the stock coming in. They told me that Apple had sold out of both 24 inch systems almost company wide which might account for the longer than expected delays.
