I've been upgrading my 2010 MP 5,1 and using lots of the expert knowledge on this forum. Thanks all.

My machine now is pretty much where I need it to be for my use case BUT... I've got upgradeitis - I want to upgrade it all!!!

Right now I don't NEED faster WiFi, bluetooth or modern connectivity BUT:
  1. Will 802.11ax or Bluetooth 5.0 ever come to the cMP or is the Z653-0014 with 802.11ac and BT 4.2 as good as it's ever going to get?
  2. Will USB4 ever come to the cMP - can the inherent speed limitations be overcome with some kind of 16x lane switching or can a USB4 compatible but speed/width limited buss be provided on PCIe 2.0? Or is the GC-TitanRidge/Sonnet Allegro USB-C as good as it's ever going to get?
I know these are speculative/unimportant questions but I don't need the above right now and if something incrementally better is coming down the (PCIe) lane in the months and years ahead I can wait to do these upgrades. But if this is how it's always going to be I will probably go ahead and upgrade on this basis just now while my hands are dry with isoprpyl and my nails are caked in thermal compound.

Thanks for indulging me!

i wish i could indulge you @14UG but i am not that capable of predicting new ways of upgrading our beloved cMP. all i can say is that my upgrade choice of x5680 leaves me with at least one more upgrade to x5690 in the pipeline!!! anyhow yes, i can confirm i am another case of upgradeitis!!!

I see the new M1 iMacs have Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. Will these be on a Broadcom chip? Any chance of them working in a cMP? If so when/how can the parts be gotten hold of?

There's still more gold ahead. Look to Highpoint Technologies for total PCIe lanes saturation. The RU1244 iis the first USB 3.99 interface to saturate a 16 lane slot. Of course you must already have a SSD7101 HBA in your other x16 slot. Bang a ssuax in slot 3 and a vega56 in slot 4. Then there's six sata ports to mess around with. Then more advanced stuff. Pulling out wifi card and putting mini-PCIe usb3 (asmedia chipset) port internally. Internal Bluetooth can be upgraded further using creative solutions too many members haven't considered.. I'll document an "exotic" super build a little later.. rest assured upgradeitis infects all cMP owners deep down. Glad you're owning it 👍
