I'm considering purchasing a MBA to replace my 1st gen MBP (2.0GHZ, 1GB) and am worried about the reports of core shutdowns causing performance problems. Has apple resolved the issue in later production runs or, am I just as likely to get shutdowns?

On a side note, how will the performance on a 1.6 / HHD MBA compare to that of my MBP?

Gracias

I have had very few problems with core shutdowns, and it is a week 1 unit. With the last update it is actually a challenge to make it happen.

I really suggest going into a store and just playing with one for a bit before purchasing. I can from a G4 MBP so to me it was a significant increase; my sister complains that it is very slow compared to her Core Duo MBP.

Remember - some Best Buy Stores have them on display in case you are not near an Apple Store.

I've had my MBA for about 5-6 weeks now, and it's been great - up until today. I was bored and thought I'd try second life a spin. I've run photoshop, flash, all kinds of stuff and had no problems, but this was the first I had tried to run anything 3D-ish (usually I do this on my desktop mac). Two minutes in, my first core shutdown. Bah. I just installed the firmware update so we'll see if that helps. I haven't done 10.5.4 yet.

I love this machine and it's been great, but it does seem to have some limitations, depending upon what you want to do.

I've had mine three-four weeks. I have only had one instance (where I was blocking the fan exhaust, running multiple apps and such) where the unit got very hot and locked up completely. Hard reboot and it hasn't happened since. My macs very rarely lock up completely. Like almost never.

I'd not call it an issue if it happens once in three-four weeks.

Buy it with a realistic expectation. It's not a gamer machine.

from the display models I've played around with, week 25+ doesn't seem to have any core shutdowns, if there is, it is extremely hard to create it.

Mine (day 1 MBA) was used to have a lot of these core shutdown. I took it to the Apple assistance and they changed the Logic Board. Since that day is perfect. And it runs cooler
