it depends on
1. what kind of external HD plug (firewire or USB 2, what other peripherals do you have attached?)
2. how heavy is your network?

i use firewire for external HDs and my other peripherals plugged into USB, pretty speedy.

If the network has Gigabit port and the computer has Gigabit network plug then on paper the network way is quicker than firewire 800..

has to be 10/100/1000 ethernet port to 10/100/1000 ethernet port to get the full speed..

If computer has 10/100 ethernet port and you use an ethernet network drive then firewire connected harddrive even 1394a (firewire 400) would be quicker

minus one fact. Netspeed general always going to be faster from a direct connection from firewire USB 2.0 than network. Just because the hard drive bottle neck on either in is going to be the interface to the computer and the how fast the hard drive can read write data to it self. Going though the network means it 1 more spot the data has to go before you computer can use it.

Besides USB 2.0 is can move data alread faster than hard drives can read write data. Add in the extra step of a network going to slow it down no matter what

few things to note here:

• in terms absolute speed, firewire 800 is faster than gigabit networking in the real world, in the same way firewire 400 is faster than USB2 - it's all due to bus speeds.

• networks have loads of overheads, USB2's bus is too narrow for using as a scratch disk, and unless you're going for Fibre Optic networking, you're better off forgetting it unless all you store is MS Word files.
