In other words, does the iPad REALLY fill some USEFUL need that other products don't do better/more practically?

Yes, you have nailed it. People who want iPads have the minds of 10-year-olds. Apple should have just sold the technology to Fisher-Price and called it a day.

Depends on your definition of REALLY and USEFUL. From your prior posts, I'd say that the answer for you is "no, it doesn't", and you're just going to argue with anyone who does find (for them) a really useful use for it.

Go into the average home and you will find it littered with products people don't need but they bought it anyways. Most of the gifts people receive for special occasions and holidays they don't actually need but they just want it. The average American does not need to consume 3000 calories a day but they want to. Many people don't need to drive an SUV but they want to anyways. Most people on this forum did not need to buy a Mac, they simply wanted to. Users on this forum easily spend $1500 on a notebook that they don't need but buy it anyways. The iPad is no different, many don't need it but will buy it anyways. I'm sure you have items that you bought that you really did not need but purchased it anyways or could have found a cheaper alternative.

There is a hint of elitism in the air here. I guess people that don't have any need for photoshop or video editing or whatever really just need "toys" to fill their meaningless lives:rolleyes:

Interestingly I had a similar opinion of the vocal posters who for some as yet to be clarified reason believe that Apple is at fault for not fulfilling their unrealistic expectations. Most of these posts have been characterized by capricious tantrums that their childish and capricious whims haven't been fulfilled.

It's a pattern that is similar and predictable which has been common to many Apple product announcements, including the original iPod, the iPhone, the Nano, and various versions of OS X. What is also predictable is that the tone of these comments almost immediately and dramatically reverse themselves once the product finally is released.

Oh I get it, you're realising that you might be wrong about the whole iPad will be a flop thing. So move on to insulting the people who are planning to buy. You know you could just say I don't like it so wont buy, but others do like it so they will. But then I suppose you couldn't feel all self important and superior.

I'm quite practical, but I have enough discretionary money to buy things I want. It's not about the money when it comes to the iPad. I just don't really want it, in it's current form. I have a Touch and love it, but a larger "touch" REALLY, REALLY needs to have flash, multitasking, 1080 output, HDMI--all things that the iPad currently doesn't include. Flash won't make it to the ipad because Apple doesn't want to reduce the revenue stream from games sold via the Appstore.

I am inclined to not getting a new iPhone with expensive voice and data package and replace it with an iPad and stupid cheap phone.

I have offices on two continents with phones in them. Most of the time I can be contacted via a landline. I pay quite a bit for mobile phone service I really never take advantage of.

No contract data for $30 is interesting to me.

I am sure the cool things that an iPhone does (everything but calls) the iPad will do better. It's more practical not to pay more for stuff I don't need.

Queue the admonishment about fitting things into pockets
