I'm going to be replacing a dying Time Capsule and I have to admit that I haven't kept up to date with wireless routers.

My parents have Comcast Xfinity for their ISP and I set the cable modem / wireless router device into bridge mode in order to use a Time Capsule as the router. Can I buy basically any modern Asus, Netgear, or TP-Link router and plug an external hard drive into the router's USB port in order to have seamless wireless backups over Time Machine for every Mac in the house?

I've read a bit about setting up NAS but I don't want to get ahead of myself and overcomplicate things. I guess I remember reading a long time ago that a lot of routers disable their USB port, so I've never thought about using non-Apple routers in a straightforward Time Machine over wifi setup.

Is it as easy as it sounds, or does it involve configuring complicated settings, flashing firmware, et cetera? Thank you!
