I really don't understand why anyone would shell out any money for a netbook. Why not carry something slightly bigger with much more features? I really don't think netbooks are necesarry, even in The mobile business world.

Does anyone else think the same?

If you're going to get a netbook, you might as well as spend an extra $100 and get a cheep dell or HP. They're just as good as a netbook, but with a real screen and actual use.

I have a UMB, so I'm all set. I just need a tablet as an addition to the family. :)

I have been browsing these forums for years. Just recently signed up. But I still have no clue what umb stands for.

I have a netbook, and I think they have their uses.

I use it when I'm doing non-work travel and I want to keep in touch with family/friends back home via email/IM only. It's light and when I'm dragging my suitcases from terminal to terminal, it's great. Or when it's in my backpack and I'm walking in the city, it's great. Or if anyone steals it, it's only like $250 to replace. And with the small size, I can put it in a large purse.

I think netbooks are stupid. Severely underpowered, tinyass screen, and cheaply built. For this reason, I have a 12" Powerbook as my "subcompact" notebook. Full blown laptop in a small (but not too small) package.

I think they can be put to good use; they are low power and cheap which makes them affordable to people who can't otherwise afford a computer.

I did buy a netbook a while back, but have sold it with OS X on it. Right now, if I were to buy a netbook it'd be the Sony P29; only issue is that costs $1500.

I have a 12" powerbook but to be honest it blows to carry it around all day. I'm in the market for a netbook as something I can throw in my bag and use on the train whilst I commute. Half the weight of my powerbook and perfect for what I do - predominantly word processing, reading pdfs, with a little bit of web and email. They're a great adjunct.

I think netbooks are very good for kids. I know a lot of younger kids get laptops from their parents, when a smaller screen and keyboard and lower specs would be just as good if not better.

Wherever I take my uMB with me I worry about damaging it. Not so with my netbook, just chuck it in your bag and go.

Netbooks do have one big upside: its physically small size makes them easy to carry around and use at any Wi-Fi hotspot (many conventional notebooks are getting ridiculously big nowadays).

My brother has a netbook, but he also has a X300 Thinkpad, which is just as light and portable w/more power. Yet he chooses to use the netbook for casual use or travel because it convenient and cheaper. I don't think he'd mind too much if the netbook was broken or stolen as compared to his pricey laptop w/ all his important documents on it.

IMO netbooks have a decent amount of power for what they're meant for. Now what I don't understand is how some people can have a iPod touch and an iPhone plus a netbook and MBP. All different shades of grey I guess.

90% of computer use is web surfing, email, office. Netbooks do all those fine if you don't mind the smaller screen and keyboard.

I have two ASUS 901's, one with Linux and one with XP. Let me not be the first to say that these units are beyond worthless. Both were in the 500 dollar range, but even at that price the user experience is beyond dismal. Sorry, but buying a current netbook is like buying IKEA furniture, cheap, looks okay, lousy to sit on, and in the end it's on the street ready for the garbage truck. Reminds me of the cell phones of the early 90's... gigantic bags with a huge battery, and crappy phone inside. I don't even think a netbook is what I'd call "linear progress" in computing. Sort of like a Neanderthal... a genetic dead end.
I'll wait for a better solution, probably from Apple.
In the meantime I'll carry my Air.

I have a 15" mbp and an acer aspire one. I work as a pilot and the netbook is a great low weight laptop to use for an hour or two during an overnight in a hotel before bed. It fits right in my kitbag with my charts, and I can leave the whole kitbag at the airport and not have to carry it though security every day. There's no way I would want to leave my $2000mbp there, and just because I want to use it at home too! If the netbook gets broken or stolen, well, it was only $200...

With an external mouse they are great little things. I'm currently testing out moblin linux on it which is designed for netbooks and it's pretty good. Not as good as OS X, but hey...

In front of my MacBook Pro
I find netbooks to be rather nice. I've got my MacBook acting as my desktop and my recently acquired HP Mini (now running Ubuntu) makes life a lot easier not having to unplug everything from the MacBook, fuss with issues made by removing the external display, etc. At a little over 2 lbs and a power cord away from mobility at any time the netbook is my choice for taking with me if I want to go browse at another location... not to mention it's nice to tote along on vacation (sometimes it's nice to use a "real" computer opposed to an iPhone). Sure it's no powerhouse, but a dual core 1.66 GHz Atom, 2 GB of RAM, and a 64 GB SSD takes care of most of my normal computing tasks with relative ease.

I have a HP Mini and a Macbook unibody, there is a huge difference between them. The netbooks arent meant to compete or replace a laptop. I get to carry a purse instead of a tote/bag and still have a laptop with me at all times. And when you figure they cost about as much as a larger iPod, I think they are a steal.

I've got four main computers that I use:
- Custom built PC in my office, Core i7, RAID, 2x 24" Ultrasharps, SLI'd GTX280's, ect. It's fast, and does everything I want from video capture and encoding to photo editing, to gaming.

- iMac sitting next to it that I do most of my web browsing, document writing, ect on. It's not nearly as fast as my main computer, but it does all the tasks I ask of it nicely.

- Thinkpad T500, my main laptop, again it's big, amazing battery life, amazingly fast, and overall about as much as I could ask for in a machine of it's class (better than the 15" MBP IMO for less $), but it's not something I would want to carry around all the time unless I need the power it has.

- Lenovo S10, I almost always have this with me because it's so easy to keep in my backpack, and not have to worry about it. It does what I need it to perfectly well, and that is email, light web browsing, and some occasional document editing. I don't need tons of power or a large screen for these light duty tasks. I could do all of my things from my phone, but they would take twice as long (if not longer), and it's a real PITA. Also my S10 makes a great car computer, I have it run my GPS and tunes while on a long trip and it works absolutley fantastic for this purpose as well, and the 10" screen is a hell of a lot easier to glance at while driving than a 3" screen on a phone, and a 15" laptop would be too large to put on the mount and still be able to get to the rest of the center console controls.

People who "don't get" netbooks clearly aren't in the market, or don't understand that they're not meant to be a primary computer, just a fill in.

It's also worth noting that a few years ago, something that had a 7-10" screen, was light, small, and really portable would have cost upwards of $1500. Hell I remember paying well over $2000 for my X41 tablet back in the day.
