Not that it really matters, but I was kind of curious because I got a replacement ipad this weekend from my local apple store.

Did it come from a brown box in the back and did they leave you with your own white box or did they swap everything and give you something else?

Apparently they all come in brown boxes, the only real way to tell is the serial number. New ones tend to start with GB I believe, and Refurbs begin with CQ?

My replacement is arriving tomorrow, so if I remember I'll tell you then.

No my point is if it were a brown box from the back that had an iPad in it to which the store swapped yours with theirs and left you with your box, I think those are new replacement models. That is what I got.

Brown box from the back. All I did was walk in with my defective iPad and no box. Also, the s/n starts with GB.

I had always heard that if you send your iPad in for a replacement battery, that they will just send you someone else's iPad. ie you don't get yours back, you get another iPad that they already did the battery swap on.

This makes me think that they would do this for anything involving an iPad swap.

that's what my replacement starts with. Got it replaced about a month ago.

its too bad they classify "refurbs" with distinct serial numbers. that kinda makes them second class citizens with possibly lower resale value, when its just as good as a brand new one.
