How can they let a review go through that gives 1 star and the only word is "poop"

Who the hell screened that and approved ot, it should have been deemed inappropriate or at least not helpful at all and never posted like it says they will do at the bottom of the review form.

That example is here:
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=284920311&mt=8

And also what gives people the right to put down an app and give it 1 star just because they don't need it, even free ones. That's like giving 1 star to a dictionary and saying, "what, you don't know what words mean or how to spell"

That example is happening with a free app that lets you type in numbers, then it spells it out for you, for writing a check or something.

Reviews of that app are simply insulting anyone that would use it, using words like dumbass. Or, simply giving it 1 start and saying they won't bother downloading it, what bull. One even said, "is this for people with down syndrome?" and gave it 1 star.

I mean what the hell, is iTunes a cesspool of hate and scum in the review sections? I know there's an equal amount of good and common sense reviews, but often it's always there to defend the app from the idiots.

Why the heck, are these reviews being allowed through. It's like they are not looked at all.

Just because I don't need an app, I don't go around giving out 1 stars and writing insults, so who are these people that do this?

If they are reviewed, it is not for a few days at least. Like others have stated, in other threads, I believe that only people who have purchased or downloaded an app should be allowed to review the app.

lol

I agree though they should restrict reviews to people that actually download the apps. I don't think the reviews are screened very well.

I would hate to be the developer that got that review.

yeah I don't think reviews are screened much, if at all... maybe only if people report the comment.

they do need to restrict it to people that have downloaded it though... I remember in the first few days of the app store being up, I saw a comment on one game where the person gave it 5 stars and said it was awesome and that *they were looking forward to playing it when they got their iPhone*
then the people that actually played it were giving it bad reviews

I mean seriously, wtf.. why are you going to give something a good review when you have no idea how it really is

Beyond that I think anyone who posts a review who clearly did not use the product should be banned for 30 days from making reviews, and if they do it a second time banned forever.

Since the current environment makes trying before you buy difficult in a lot of cases, the review system is going to be important, and right now it is a big waste of time. Especially when an app is new and that is a time when valid reviews are probably the most crucial.

You can report offensive/off-topic/and non-reviews to Apple.

You can also label reviews as "not helpful" and they get moved to the very bottom of the review list (not extremely helpful when there's only 2 or 3 reviews, but still).

Unless competition abuses that, or anyone that disliked the app for no reason.

I wrote a review for one game I bought, 6+ paragraphs, with categories like gameplay, control, graphics, sound, notes, etc. I was clear, gave my initial response, then how I enjoyed it better as I understood it more, and reasons for it. Yet, only 4 out of 6 found it helpful. Who were the two that didn't, seemed impossible. I could be wrong, but I put effort into it than most.

It's the one by B. Harris under Circulate's reviews:

4 out of 6 is still a majority. And at least Apple would not eliminate your review if someone reported it.

And technically there's nothing stopping "competition" from writing legitimate reviews that detail how much they dislike your product (or perhaps how much their product is superior).

Opinions of reviews, much likes reviews themselves, are subjective. There's only so much Apple can do. Just help with the process by playing by the rules yourself and reporting the garbage.

The apps aren't reviewed, the comments aren't reviewed, the iphone activation server plan wasn't reviewed, the .Mac to MobileMe migration wasn't reviewed, and now it is becoming clear that the 2.0 firmware code wasn't reviewed very well either!

Tough times for Apple.
