Are tempered glass screen protectors safe for kids?

I am shopping for a screen protector for my nieces iPad Mini 4. I am considering a tempered glass one, but I read one comment on Amazon that mentioned replacing it when it breaks. After reading that, I'm a little concerned to give it to a kid. How likely is it to break? And if it does break, will it shatter like glass normally does?

It's tempered glass so it's very safe.
